Davide Cimolai (Lampre-Merida) outsprinted Bryan Coquard (Europcar) and Michael Matthews (Orica-GreenEdge) to claim stage five of Paris-Nice.
A breakaway led by Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal) was reeled in inside the final kilometre of the 192km stage.
Andrew Talansky (Cannondale-Garmin), Egor Silin (Katusha), Romain Sicard (Europcar), and Pawel Poljański (Tinkoff-Saxo) formed the early breakaway and De Gendt managed to drop his fellow escapees to lead into the final kilometre but fell agonisingly short of securing the stage win.
However, just as it looked as though Coquard may secure the stage after he hit the front, Cimolai stole it at the line.
Michal Kwiatkowski (Etixx-Quick-Step) finished in the peloton to retain his overall lead.
