Arda Turan scored a second half winner for Atletico Madrid as they ran out 1-0 winners against Juventus.
The first half was frantic: full of running, fouls and an increasing edge of nastiness. Both teams were reduced to shots from long range, with Mario Mandzukic and Paul Pogba seeing their shots saved and go wide respectively. There was just a single shot on target in the first 45 minutes.
Juventus had not yet conceded a goal since the start of the season and they defended solidly, wisely keeping Patrice Evra in an advanced position rather than as a left-back.
In the second half, the game continued in the same spirit, with little constructive attack and plenty of cynical challenges. With fifteen minutes to go, Atletico broke the deadlock when Juanfran's whipped cross was slotted home by Turan.
Juventus could not rouse themselves in pursuit of an equaliser, and the result leaves all four sides in Group A on three points.

TALKING POINT
Do Juventus have the creativity to succeed in Europe? They have the defensive discipline, despite conceding against Atletico in this game, but they lack genius in the final third. Their midfield is physical, and has a goal threat of its own, but with Evra and Lichtsteiner, they fail to make the most of the wide play, and Tevez and Llorente are both prosaic, if often excellent.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Arda Turan (Atletico Madrid): One of Atletico's heroes from last season, he is the perfect Simeone player. Disciplined positionally, full of running, direct, and capable of creating goals from out wide and scoring his own. He was made captain of Galatasaray at just 21, and he leads by example, if not in name, for his side now.
