Stoke's energetic 1-0 victory over Newcastle at the Britannia Stadium could well be the final nail in Alan Pardew's managerial coffin.
A first home goal of the season and first home win of the campaign was prompted by Peter Crouch's header on 15 minutes from a Victor Moses cross that sailed into the net with Tim Krul given no chance.
Stoke rise to 11th in the standings, but a sodden evening in Stoke could well spend the end for Pardew, whose miserable 2014 continues to go from bad to worse as Newcastle manager.
Owner Mike Ashley, who apparently said defeat here would result in Pardew's dismissal, seemed to visibly groan at the full-time whistle.
Pardew's side have a lamentable record this year. They have won only five matches in the Premier League with four draws and 16 defeats. It is little wonder their fans continued to hold up placards demanding action be taken to arrest such a wretched slump.
Quite simply, Pardew boasts a series of results that prompts sackings with Newcastle slumping to second bottom of the table clutching a miserable three points from their opening six games.
They are only above newly-promoted Burnley on goals scored. This might well be it for Pardew at Newcastle.

KEY MOMENTS
15' - GOAL! Stoke 1-0 Newcastle! Stoke move ahead. Decent cross from Moses and Crouch rises above Coloccini to head into the visiting net. No chance for Krul in goal.
21' - STOKE DENIED A PENALTY! Appeals for a penalty against Gouffran who was seconds late on Moses. Clear penalty, but the referee Craig Pawson said no. Real error by the referee and his linesmen.
43' - CHANCE! Stunning stop by Begovic to claw out the hit by Janmaat. Ball was travelling, but an excellent save by the Stoke goalkeeper.
49' - CHANCE! Muniesa with a lovely cross. Isn't cleared properly before Arnautovic sees a shot come back off a post with Krul beaten.
62' - CHANCE! Almost a second for Stoke. Newcastle all over the place at the back. Crouch and Moses try to combine. Somehow a shot by Moses is halted by Krul. Newcastle so fortunate to escape with that one.
82' - CHANCE! Colback smashes the ball against the bar from five yards out. Great ball by Obertan, but that should have been in the net as he got lucky when the ball broke to him.

KEY STATS
Only in 1999/2000 (1st win in match 8) and in 1898/1899 (1st win in match 11), have Newcastle had to wait longer for their first win of a top flight season.
Stoke keep a home clean sheet in the PL for the first time in four, since this fixture was last played, also 1-0.
Alan Pardew loses his 200th league match in England, having been in charge of 591 – W244-D147-L200.
Newcastle’s three points from their opening six matches is their worst start since having the same tally at this stage in the 2003/04 season.
Under Pardew, Newcastle have never won away from home in the PL after being behind at the break, and have drawn just twice (W0-D2-L21). They last won on 17 April 2006, against Sunderland (4-1) and last avoided defeat from this position on 25 August 2012, at Everton (2-2).

TALKING POINT: Will Ashley pull the trigger? Tricky to call it one way or another. Ashley doesn't do much talking, but he must be concerned about the plight of his club at the moment. He said he was only joking when he said defeat at Stoke would see Pardew binned. More concerning are the body of fans who called for the head of the Newcastle manager throughout the match. As Ashley knows from his role running leisurewear shops, you ignore the customers at your peril.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Victor Moses (Stoke) - Great appetite, energy and skill from the on-loan Chelsea player. An excellent attitude shines through for Stoke. Just unfortunate he has not been afforded an opportunity on a bigger stage.
