Michael Schumacher will retire from Formula One at the end of the season, the German confirmed immediately after winning the Italian Grand Prix at Monza this afternoon.
His Ferrari team circulated a press release containing the announcement while the German national anthem rang out for Schumacher, 37, on the winners' podium, and the driver then told the world in his own words a few minutes later.
Schumacher, who has driven in Formula One since 1991, said: "It has been a very special day, to finish in this style, looking at the championship and at what's going to happen in the future.
"There's been a lot of discussion about my future, the fans all have a right to be explained what's going to happen.
"Sorry it took longer than you wanted, but you have to set a right moment. At the end of this year, I've decided with the team to retire from racing.
"It has been an exceptional time. I've loved every single moment, the good and the bad."
During his 16-year career, Schumacher has driven for Jordan, Benetton and Ferrari, won a record 90 Grands Prix and taken seven world titles - another record.
He paid special tribute to his family and friends and said that it had been down to them that he had been able to continue at the top for so long.
Schumacher added: "Particularly, I want to thank by Dad, my passed away Mum, and my wife and kids, who all the time supported what I was doing. To survive and to perform would have been impossible without them. I can't thank them enough.
"Also to my mates at Benetton and Ferrari. I have so many friends there and it has been a really tough choice not to work with them at this level any more. They're just so great. The day has to come though, and I feel this is the moment."
Schumacher will be replaced by Finn Kimi Raikkonen at the team next season. Felipe Massa will keep his seat.
