Both teams entered the Games with a reputation for a lot of offense and not much defense and they lived up to expectations in a wide-open battle.
With the score tied 3-3 and time winding down, Gaborik picked up a loose puck at centre ice, drove down the right side and fired a low wrist shot into the net.
Three minutes later, and with only half a minute left to play, he did the same on the left side to put the game out of reach.
Pavol Demitra gave Slovakia the lead at 9:07 of the first, but Pavel Datsyuk replied just 53 seconds later to even the score.
Alexei Kovalev gave Russia a 2-1 advantage at 12:38 and the Russians took that lead into the locker room after the first period.
Lubomir Visnovsky tied it up at 5:51 of the second with a power play goal, only to see Washington Capitals' rookie Alexander Ovechkin score one with the man advantage four minutes later.
Peter Bondra the scored a power play goal to bring things level at 13:05 of the second frame, and the score stayed that way until Gaborik's late heroics.
