Tottenham are hopeful that they can sign a striker as a backup for Harry Kane before the transfer window closes on October 5, manager Jose Mourinho said on Wednesday.
"I'm optimistic (of signing a new striker) but more than that I like the feeling that we're trying everything to do it," Mourinho told reporters before Thursday's Europa League playoff against Israel's Maccabi Haifa.
"My club and structure is trying everything to do it. If we succeed, great, I believe so and if we don't, that's football."
Gareth Bale's return to his former club from Real Madrid has cast doubts on the future of midfielder Dele Alli, who has lost his place in Mourinho's side.
"I cannot confirm if Dele is playing or not. The only thing I can say is that he's being very professional," Mourinho added.
"I have respect for him. Even yesterday he trained well and hard. He has the respect of his team mates."
14:50 - Spurs set for Rudiger swoop
Tottenham are ready to turn to one of their fiercest rivals in an attempt to improve their defence. According to the Mail, Spurs are "seriously considering" a late move for Chelsea centre-back Antonio Rudiger.
The German has been frozen out by Blues boss Frank Lampard and has caught the attention of the north London club. Negotiations have stalled between Tottenham and Inter Milan for Jose Mourinho's number one target Milan Skriniar, leading to the possibility of Spurs swooping for Rudiger.
The Mail state that Chelsea would only allow the German international to join their London rivals if "the deal suited them". Paris Saint-Germain and West Ham United are also interested in signing Rudiger.
Paper Round's view: Chelsea are in a bit of a pickle here. Rudiger is yet to feature for the Blues this season, having not played a single minute in any competition... but could Chelsea sell to a direct rival? Such a bitter rival too. It would be a bad look - especially considering Tottenham knocked the west London side out of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening.
However, if Rudiger stayed at Stamford Bridge, his value would decrease and Chelsea would miss out on a chunk of cash. Obviously a transfer to PSG would be ideal. The Blues better hope the French champions step up their interest before an agreement with Tottenham is even considered.

Ademola Lookman has joined Fulham from RB Leipzig on a season-long loan.
The 22-year-old forward, who has represented England up to U21 level, told the club's official website: "I’m glad to have it over the line and done now. I'm glad I can be here to help the team.
"After the conversations I had with Scott Parker, I got a great feeling, that's the working relationship I want to have.
He’s young and hungry and I’m young and hungry as well so it’s a good match.
Lookman becomes Fulham's seventh signing of the transfer window.

Koeman also confirmed that United States fullback Sergino Dest was undergoing a medical with the club on Wednesday ahead of a move from Ajax which Spanish media reports said was worth €20m plus €5m in variables.
"Sergino is doing his medical at the moment, he still needs to sign contracts but it seems almost certain that he will sign," Koeman said of the 19-year-old, who has made three appearances for the United States.
Dest, who broke into Ajax's first team from the academy last year to make 27 appearances in all competitions, will compete with Sergi Roberto for Barca's right back spot after Nelson Semedo left for Wolverhampton Wanderers last week.

Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman says he is "counting on" Ousmane Dembele as the forward continues to be linked to Manchester United.
Dembele only came on as a 70th-minute substitute in Barca's 4-0 La Liga win over Villarreal on Sunday and was, according to Deportes Cuatro, late for training on Monday.
Koeman hints there is interest in the 23-year-old with Sky Sports reporting United are in talks with the Catalan club over a loan deal for the wideman, but the 57-year-old would like to see him remain at the Nou Camp.
"Dembele’s situation? I’m counting on him," the Dutchman told reporters ahead of Barcelona's La Liga clash at Celta Vigo on Thursday night.
"He was very good in the first weeks [of pre-season] but he had a downturn last week.
He trained well today and I’m counting on him. But these are decisions for the club and the player.
Dembele has been included in Barca's squad to face Celta.

12:30 - No Braithwaite-type deal ever again
The much-maligned rule which allowed Barcelona to sign Martin Braithwaite outside of a transfer window last February has been removed by the Spanish football federation, bringing Spain into line with all other European nations.
The rule, article 124.3 in the federation's regulations, allowed clubs to sign a player from another team after the window had shut if a player in their squad in the same position had been declared injured for a minimum of five months.
But the rule was removed from the new set of statutes published by the federation on Tuesday, and now only players who are out of contract or unemployed may join clubs outside of a transfer window.
The rule, which only existed in Spain, came under global scrutiny when Barcelona signed Denmark striker Braithwaite from fellow La Liga side Leganes in February, after Ousmane Dembele was ruled out for six months due to rupturing his hamstring.
Leganes, who vented their anger at the continued existence of the rule, were helpless to prevent the transfer after Barca triggered Braithwaite's release clause of €18m and were unable to sign a replacement forward.
The Madrid side were eventually relegated from La Liga on the final day of the season.
Braithwaite's signing led to condemnation from FIFA while federation president Luis Rubiales conceded at the time that the rule was unfair and pledged to end it.

11:44 - VDB's agent hits out at Man Utd
Donny Van de Beek's agent Sjaak Swart has criticised Manchester United for the way they have utilised their £39m summer signing from Ajax.
The Netherlands international has played just 24 minutes in two Premier League games this season against Crystal Palace and Brighton. He scored against Palace and earnt United a penalty for their winner against the Seagulls. He also started in United's 3-0 win against Luton in the Carabao Cup third last Tuesday.
But Swart is far from pleased with the time the 23-year-old is spending on the substitutes bench and has criticised how the Premier League club are performing generally.
"A substitute; I don't like it at all," he told Voetbalprimeur.
"I couldn't do it, coming on with four minutes left. You'd have to leave me on the bench.
"But, I have to say, he still did three good things. And the penalty, where the winning goal came from, came from him. He did well in those couple of minutes.
"But normally they should have lost 7-1. Brighton hit the post and the bar five times. They (Brighton) have a nice team, but that shouldn't happen to Manchester United."

He is likely to be the club's first-choice right-back following the departure of Nelson Semedo to Wolves.

Ross Barkley has joined Aston Villa on loan until the end of the season.
Villa boss Dean Smith said: “Capturing a player of Ross’s quality is a real coup for our club and I am certain he will thrive here and improve our team.”
The 26-year-old England international joins from Chelsea having made 52 appearances at the southwest London club since arriving at Stamford Bridge in January 2018.
Before moving to Chelsea, Barkley made 179 appearances for Everton, scoring 27 goals, after breaking through their academy as a 17-year-old.
Barkley is Villa's fifth signing this window. He follows Ollie Watkins, Bertrand Traore, Emiliano Martinez and Matty Cash through the door.
10:15 - Man City 'desperate' for new defenders
Manchester City are hoping to bring in a new left-back before the transfer window closes, according to the Times.
The report states that the Premier League club's plan to sign a new full-back is dependent on the exit of Oleksandr Zinchenko. Pep Guardiola wants to sell the Ukraine international before bringing in a new defender, with Barcelona reportedly interested in signing Zinchenko as back-up to Jordi Alba.
Bayern Munich's David Alaba is at the top of Manchester City's wishlist and the versatile Austrian could be available for a cut-price fee due to his contract expiring next June.
Ajax left-back Nicolas Tagliafico is also a potential target, but the Dutch side are unlikely to allow the 28-year-old to depart this summer.
Paper Round's view: What do you do if you lose 5-2 in your second match of the Premier League season? Whip out the chequebook and sign some new defenders. Ruben Dias' move to Manchester was confirmed on Tuesday evening and now it looks like a new left-back could be joining too. Left-back is a position that Pep Guardiola has really struggled with at City. Benjamin Mendy was meant to be a long-term solution, but he has become more of problem.
Whenever he isn't injured, the £52 million Frenchman has made too many mistakes for the Premier League side. Zinchenko, originally an attacking midfielder, has filled in at left-back but Alaba could be a genuine world-class signing. The 28-year-old has won it all in Munich, so now maybe his former boss could convince him to move to England.

Barcelona captain Lionel Messi has said he wishes to move on from his recent bid to walk out of the club and his recent attacks on the board of directors, calling for everyone to pull together to help the team have a successful season.
Messi handed Barca an official notice in August of his desire to terminate his contract before eventually deciding to stay for the coming season, the last on his current deal, because he did not want to face a legal battle with the club.
After rowing back on his decision to leave, Messi continued to attack club president Josep Maria Bartomeu in a September interview and also criticised the club for their treatment of Luis Suarez, who left Barca for Atletico Madrid.
Yet in an interview with Barcelona-based newspaper Sport published late on Tuesday, he said he no longer wanted any fights with the club.
"After so many arguments, I would like to bring an end to everything. We all have to be united and assume that the best is yet to come. We must always be united and pull in the same direction," Messi said.
I take responsibility for my errors and if they existed, it was only to make Barcelona better and stronger.
Barca's all-time top scorer also said he regretted hurting the club's supporters but stressed that he believed at the time that leaving the team where he has spent the last 20 years would have been good for the club.
He added: "If at any moment, any of them were annoyed by something that I said or did, let there be no doubts that anything I did was always with the club's best interests in mind."

Borussia Dortmund are set to reject an incoming bid for Jadon Sancho from Manchester United worth €90 million, according to the Guardian.
The Red Devils' interest in their 'number one transfer target' has been made public all summer, but the German club have told United "there is no point bidding" unless the offer meets their €120 million asking-price. The Premier League side had hoped that Dortmund would "soften" as the closure of transfer window approached.
United could shift their interest to a season-long loan bid for Barcelona's Ousmane Dembele, but a move could prove "very difficult" with the World Cup winner uninterested in leaving the Camp Nou.
Paper Round's view: Why have Manchester United waited until the last week of the transfer window to make their bid? The Sancho saga has been going on for months. It makes no sense. Dortmund set a public deadline to get a Sancho move complete and it was in August! Surely there was no way that United actually thought they would sign the England international this week... especially with a bid that was significantly lower than the price Dortmund had demanded all summer long.
So who will United sign instead? Dembele doesn't want to leave Barcelona, Gareth Bale re-joined Tottenham Hotspur... who else is left? Ed Woodward better prepare for a busy weekend.

Manchester United are interested in signing Ismaila Sarr as an alternative to Jadon Sancho, according to the Watford Observer.
The 22-year-old Senegal international has four years left on his existing contract and he could cost United around £40m should they sign the highly-rated winger.
Speaking to Senegalese publication Sans Limite ahead of the 20/21 campaign, he said: "I still have years of contract with Watford, another 4 years. If Watford wants me to stay, I'll play in the Championship; my departure also depends on them.
"I really don't know what to say. We are going to play in the Championship since there is no transfer yet."
Sarr made his first start for Watford this season in their 1-0 win against Luton on Saturday.

Paper Round’s view: Transfer theories have been built on less, but there is unlikely to be too much in something like that until the transfer is confirmed by Arsenal - if it ever is. Liverpool's new midfield signing Thiago Alcantara will miss their next two games, manager Jurgen Klopp said on Monday.
The Spaniard was signed from Bayern Munich earlier this month and made his debut against Chelsea last week but was not in the squad for their 3-1 win against Arsenal at Anfield.
"After the international break he will be fine, for sure,” Klopp told Sky Sports after the Premier League match. "That’s the situation in the moment. He is not fit enough to be involved today, but that’s it."

Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce could make a surprising signing this transfer window, reports the Sun.
The club have taken Florent Indalecio on trial after the 23-year-old midfielder left St Etienne on a free contract. The player has attracted interest from League One but may have his time in the North East extended after impressing in the early stages of his trial.
Paper Round’s view: Newcastle have made some adroit signings this transfer window already. Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser have arrived from Bournemouth for a small total fee, and Jeff Hendrick from Burnley is, like Fraser, another free transfer. They probably have enough to stay up for another year and owner Mike Ashley is clearly unwilling to invest for the long term, so a bargain like Indalecio will obviously appeal.

Real Madrid will make a blockbuster move for Kylian Mbappe in 2021, with the Frenchman already giving the green light to the Spanish giants, club sources have told .
The Frenchman’s contract at PSG ends in 2022, and with the 21-year old having already signalled his intention not to renew, the club will likely seek to recoup some of the €180m they spent on signing him from AS Monaco.

The Guardian reports that Manchester United have made a bid for Porto defender Alex Telles.
The 27-year-old Brazilian left-back is in the last year of his contract in Portugal and United note they can sign him on a pre-contract for nothing in January. They have offered £12 million, below Porto’s asking price of £18 million. They are yet to make an offer for Jadon Sancho.
Paper Round’s view: United are dawdling over transfers yet again and the cynic would suggest that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will need to lose his next game in order to put the pressure on Ed Woodward to spend. Luke Shaw is out of his depth at the club and signing a defender who can actually attack while being reliable at the back would be a huge improvement.

Fulham director Tony Khan has apologised to supporters following Monday's 3-0 Premier League defeat by Aston Villa and vowed to bring in new players to boost their chances of staying up.
Fulham, who were promoted after winning the Championship playoff final against Brentford at Wembley last season, are rooted to the bottom of the table after losing their first three games and conceding 10 goals.
"I apologise to supporters for our performance. We've looked to add centre backs since Wembley, I'm sorry we haven't yet as two got Covid, we lost a free we thought was close and had another issue with a fourth centre back," Khan tweeted.
"I promise players in and better efforts from this squad ... We all need to do a better job. Everyone at the club for the past year worked really hard to get the team up and now we need to work significantly harder to stay up."

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard holds Ruben Loftus-Cheek "in high regard" but says the 24-year-old midfielder may have to go on loan given the competition for places at the club.
Aston Villa and West Ham United have been linked with a move for Loftus-Cheek and Lampard said it was important for the Englishman to get regular game time.
"I am very open with Ruben. We have had a couple of conversations in the last week. He is fit as a fiddle so he could play week in, week out, but he needs to play," Lampard said.
"He has done a lot of work and would have been playing a lot of games earlier if it wasn't for lockdown. There is a possibility Ruben might go out to play games because I think that would be great for him."

Leeds are interested in signing Leicester attacker Demarai Gray, according to the Daily Mail.
Gray made his football league debut for Birmingham City in October 2013 aged just 17. He soon became a regular for the Blues in the Championship. He made 72 league appearances for Birmingham, scoring eight goals before signing for Leicester City in January 2016.
Leeds are keen to sign him this summer. Gray is in the final year of his contract, so a deal may be easy to make.

At 29, Kante's days as a sellable asset are running out. Clubs will only be willing to pay big money for the high octane midfielder for another year or so, so if United are willing to pay upwards of £40m for Kante, a deal could make sense, financially, for Chelsea, especially given the difficult market at the moment.
United are reasonably well stocked in midfield, but they need to start addressing just how vulnerable they are looking defensively. Central defensive additions this transfer window are a must, but someone with the defensive stats that Kante brings, who can offer so much protection in front of the back four, should also at least be considered.
He would go against what the club are trying to do at the moment - look at more long-term additions - but the chaos on the south coast against Brighton on Saturday shows just how desperate United are for defensive improvement.
Selling to a rival is not normally good practice but in this current climate, if United are the only option, selling a 29-year-old for good money on the back of Chelsea's outlay this summer, could turn out to be very sensible indeed.
