Austria's Olympic champion Fritz Strobl upstaged team mate Hermann Maier and in-form American Bode Miller in Wednesday's second training session for this week's men's World Cup downhill race at Beaver Creek.
Strobl, who has not won a World Cup race for two years and suffered an eye injury last week at Lake Louise, produced the fastest time with 1 minute 41.01 seconds.
"My run today proves that you can be fast without attacking too hard," the Austrian told reporters. "But we will see how it all goes tomorrow."
Overall World Cup champion Maier finished second in 1:41.10 while Miller, who became the first man to win the opening three races of the World Cup season in different disciplines, was third in 1:41.15.
Miller, Maier's main rival, left the Austrian trailing in his wake at Lake Louise, Canada last weekend when he stormed to victory in the super-G and downhill.
Norway's Lasse Kjus did not take part in Wednesday's training because of flu and has been ruled out of Friday's downhill race.
The super-G is scheduled for Thursday, the giant slalom on Saturday and the slalom on Sunday.
