Italian Christof Innerhofer posted the fastest time of the first training session ahead of the World Cup downhill in Bormio.
Innerhofer, a winner here two years ago, went quickest on the icy course in temperatures which were as low as -13 degrees Celsius.
His time of two minutes, 1.64 seconds was three-quarters of a second quicker than his nearest rival, the Austrian veteran Michael Walchhofer.
Walchhofer's compatriot Klaus Kroell was 0.97 behind the quickest time in third.
Swiss downhiller Didier Cuche finished fourth, with Bode Miller, a man with a history of success in Bormio, fifth fastest.
A second day of training follows tomorrow, with the race scheduled for Wednesday.
