Italian skier Federica Brignone won her first World Cup of the season in the super-G event in St Anton am Arlberg on Saturday in Austria. Second place on the podium went to Swiss competitor Joana Haehlen, and Lara Gut-Behrami took third. The season's overall leader continues to be American Mikaela Shiffrin, who is not competing in Austria for this event.
Italian skier Federica Brignone won the World Cup super-G in St Anton am Arlberg, Austria on Saturday.
Her time of 1:00.21 was the fastest of the pack as she recorded her first victory of the season and the 21st of her career.
The 32-year-old’s eighth World Cup super-G victory comes in a discipline that she won the World Cup for last season.
Alongside her on the podium were two Swiss athletes, Joana Haehlen and Lara Gut-Behrami. Haehlen was 0.54s behind the winner in second, with Gut-Behramin just shy of two-thirds of a second.
After three super-G races so far this season, there are seven planned events left in the calendar. The current leader of this campaign is another Italian, Elena Curtoni, who shares the lead with Norwegian Ragnhild Mowinckel, both on 140 points. Third is Switzerland’s Corinne Suter with 132 points, and Brignone now sits fourth on 129.
Speaking after her victory, Brignone explained that she had been training little in the build-up to the event since St Moritz.
She said: “It’s finally there, also in speed. I haven’t been training, actually, just one day from St Mortiz. I’m feeling good. I’m feeling good with my skis. I’m doing what I want, I know I can push, that's what I try to do today but I wasn’t sure it was enough today. I felt a little bit of a mistake before the ice fall, but from there on I know that I pushed all the way down and this made the difference. I’m so happy and so proud."
Adding if she used her experience of the different Alpine skiing disciplines to earn her win, she continued: “I tried to mix everything together, all the pieces of the puzzle. I was able to make it and I'm really happy.”
In the wider competition, America’s Mikaela Shiffrin tops the leaderboard on 1195 points, well clear of Petra Vlhova in second with 796. Shiffrin is not competing at Saint Anton in this event.
The super-G was held on Saturday instead of the scheduled downhill because of the amount of fresh snow.
