Sprint stars hunt for more

European 100 metres champions Francis Obikwelu and Kim Gevaert continue their hunt for sprint doubles on Thursday.

Portugal's Obikwelu, who set a championship record when he clinched the men's 100 in 9.99 seconds, comfortably won his heats in the 200 on Wednesday and lines up as favourite in the final over the longer distance

Belgian Gevaert will start her 200 metres campaign with the women's heats.

"I don't know whether I can win two golds but I know I'm feeling good and I'm in excellent shape," she said.

There could be a changing of the guard when the decathlon starts as champion and world record holder Roman Sebrle of the Czech Republic faces the top two points scorers in Europe this year, Romain Barros of France and Hungarian Attila Zsivoczky.

The two-day 10-discipline competition starts with the 100 metres.

German world champion Franka Dietzsch is favourite to take the women's discus title as he comes into the event having registered the leading throw of the season by almost two metres.

Other finals being contested are the 50 km walk, the men's 400 metres hurdles and the women's 400 and 800.
