Indians OF Martin cleared to resume baseball activities

Cleveland Indians outfielder Leonys Martin is expected to be ready for full baseball activity by the start of the 2019 season the team announced Tuesday as the 30-year-old continues his recovery of a life-threatening bacterial disease.

Martin was examined at the Cleveland Clinic on Tuesday and cleared to resume
baseball activities, the team announced. Martin will begin a strength and
conditioning program designed to have him ready for spring training.

Early this offseason, Martin agreed to a one-year, $3 million deal with the
Indians for 2019.

Martin became ill after a game on Aug. 7. He was taken to the hospital the
following day when his condition quickly worsened.

He was diagnosed with a life-threatening bacterial infection that ravaged
internal organs throughout his bloodstream, president of baseball operations
Chris Antonetti told reporters at the time. He also was ruled out for the rest
of the 2018 season.

Martin was acquired by the Indians from the Detroit Tigers just seven days
before he became ill. He was 5-for-15 in six games for Cleveland.

Martin batted .251 with nine homers and 29 RBIs in 78 games in his lone season
in Detroit prior to the trade.

Overall, Martin has a .248 career average with 49 homers and 209 RBIs in 705
games with the Texas Rangers (2011-15), Seattle Mariners (2016-17), Chicago
Cubs (2017), Tigers and Indians.
