Ben Stokes' side were dismissed for 218 in their first innings after being in a decent position at 175-3. England suffered another batting collapse as India finished in a strong position after the first day of the final Test in Dharamsala.
Not for the first time this series England let a promising position slip away as they lost their last seven wickets for just 43 runs to be bowled out for 218.
Zak Crawley top scored with 79 for England, who have already lost the five-match series as they trail 3-1.
India reached 135-1 in response, 83 runs behind, with Yashasvi Jaiswal (57) and Rohit Sharma (52*) both hitting half-centuries.
The second day starts at 3.30am UK time, live on TNT Sports, with England desperate for early wickets.

Batting collapse costs England again

After winning the toss and choosing to bat in cool conditions, Ben Duckett (27) and Crawley put on 64 for the first England wicket.
The partnership was broken when Duckett got a leading edge trying a big shot and was caught in Kuldeep Yadav's first over.
Crawley continued to look in the groove as he passed his fourth half-century of the series.
But England lost Ollie Pope on the stroke of lunch as he came down the pitch and was stumped by wicket-keeper Dhruv Jurel.
Crawley was the next to go as his enterprising knock ended at 79 when he was bowled by Kuldeep.
Jonny Bairstow, playing his 100th Test, and Joe Root pushed England towards 200.
But they didn’t reach that total without losing a bunch of wickets.
Bairstow (29), Root (27) and Stokes (0) were all dismissed in the space of six balls as England fell to 175-6.
Tom Hartley (six) and Mark Wood (0) were then caught off Ravichandran Ashwin as England lost five wickets for eight runs.
Ben Foakes (24) took England past 200 before he was bowled by Ashwin, who then dismissed James Anderson for a duck three balls later to wrap up the innings.

Jaiswal, Rohit lead strong India reply

India were impressive in response as they closed on England's below-par total.
Jaiswal continued his stellar series with another half-century, hitting Bashir for three sixes in one over and passing 1,000 runs in just his ninth Test.
England thought they had Rohit caught down leg but it was overturned on review as it clipped the thigh pad.
The tourists eventually got the breakthrough as Jaiswal was stumped when he missed the ball trying to swipe Bashir for a third successive boundary.
But Shubman Gill (26*) and Rohit saw India to the close without any further losses and with their eyes on soon moving into the lead.
