Will Jacks has revealed that social media was where he discovered he had not been handed a central England contract.
Jacks, who opens the Three Lions’ batting order against the West Indies live on TNT Sports on Sunday, found out the news that he was not one of the 26 players to receive a central contract on X (formerly Twitter) back in October.
Jacks plays his county cricket for Surrey, and also played for Pretoria Capitals in the South African SA20 competition.
The 25-year-old batsman, who can also bowl off-spin, has played all three forms of international cricket for England, and made his test debut against Pakistan in December 2022.
He said: “I just ended up seeing it on Twitter like everyone else did and that was obviously disappointing.
“I was hoping to get one. I felt like I’d been around the squad. Maybe it came one or two tours early and maybe if I’d played a little bit more maybe I would have had one.
“It was a bit of a difficult one. I didn’t really find out at all. I knew everyone was hearing and I was waiting to hope that I would find out and then I didn’t.”
Jacks sought the opinion of Rob Key, the England managing director, to ask why he had not been offered a contract.
“It was nothing really negative about me that they said – it is always about why other people have one above me which is understandable," he said.
"There’s obviously loads of guys who are in the World Cup who deserve to have one and I understand that. And there’s obviously a limited number you can give out. Obviously the bowlers are prioritised because of injury.”
