Russia through to Curling World Championship play-offs despite defeat

Russia and United States have both qualified for the play-offs of the Women's Curling World Championships in Canada despite the former losing their latest match.
Despite losing to Korea by 7-8 after an extra end, Russia progressed due to results elsewhere with the Americans through despite not playing in the afternoon session.
The pair join Canada, Sweden and Korea in the play-offs with the Czech Republic most likely to join them though China can still mathematically progress.
In the penultimate round-robin session, Switzerland scoring three points in the eighth end to help them to a 7-6 victory over Italy.
Japan had a 7-5 win over a Czech team that had regular second player Tereza Plisokova substituting for an unwell skip Anna Kubeskova.
Japan skip Tori Koana said: "That was a really tough game and we lost some shots and this week we've lost some games, so I'm happy and relieved about the win in that game.
"Here, we have ice with a big curl and it's fast, really good ice. Usually we practice on straight ice, so now we've learned how to curl on fast ice."
Thanks largely to steals in the first two ends that gave them a 4-0 lead, Scotland beat the Olympic champions Sweden, while, Korea stole a point in the extra end to beat Russia.
As the two teams ranked at the top of the standings, Canada and Sweden now move directly to the semi-finals, while the battle for the sixth and last play-off slot is between Czech Republic and China.
