United States defeat Scotland in latest World Cup round robin

Hosts United States kept up their march at the top of Group A after a narrow victory over spirited Scotland in the latest round robin of the Curling World Cup in Omaha.

The Americans had to come from behind, with Scotland leading 4-2 after five ends. However, tellingly, the Group A leaders claimed three stones to move into the lead after the sixth.

After trading stones in the final two ends, it was the Americans who edged a tight encounter.

In the other Group A match, China downed Canada 10-6 after a battle which saw heavy scoring in the dramatic final stages.

China led 4-3 after four ends, and seemingly struck a decisive blow when Qiang Zou and his side scored three more in the fifth to extend their lead to 7-3.

But back came the Canadians with an instant three, and it was only a third three-stone end in the favour of China which ended the battling Canadian challenge.

Group B saw Sweden claim the Scandinavian bragging rights with a 7-2 triumph over Norway, while Olympic bronze medallists Sweden were edged out by Japan in a tactical 6-4 battle.

In the women's competition, South Korea and Japan became the first sides through to the knockouts as they beat Canada and China respectively in confident fashion.

Japan's 8-2 win over their opponents sees them maintain their perfect record in Omaha, with five wins from as many outings on the ice.

Korea, meanwhile, had to battle for their 5-3 triumph over Canada in the only fixture of the morning session, but a stone in the final end sealed victory as they beat out their closest rivals in Group A.

The mixed doubles competition saw Jenny Perret and Martin Rios grab a place in Sunday's finals thanks to a tight 6-5 win over Sweden.

Elsewhere in Group A Canada ran out 8-6 winners over South Korea.
