Jesus Herrada won the second stage of the Criterium du Dauphine while Chris Froome remains third overall after finishing eighth.
The Movistar rider raced away in the closing moments of the uphill stage in Chalmazel–Jeansagnière winning the uphill sprint by surprisingly giving the peleton the slip before holding off the late attackers to finish in first place.
Team Sky rider Froome remains 13 seconds behind overall leader Alberto Contador - who won Sunday's opening uphill prologue - in third place. Richie Porte of BMC is second six seconds behind.
The third stage from Boen-sur-Lignon to Tournon-sur-Rhone on Wednesday is another hilly demand covering a distance of 187km.
France's Tony Gallopin (Lotto-Soudal) was second on the day and Belgium's Serge Pauwels (Dimension Data) was third.
The day's six-man breakaway were kept within reach by the Tinkoff and Team Sky squads and Etixx-QuickStep were to the fore approaching the final climb.
The attacks began, but the peloton swept up those making late charges for victory before Herrada's decisive, stage-winning attack.
