One of Weylandt's best friends in the peloton was the American Tyler Farrar, who made a touching tribute to the Belgian rider last night, claiming he was "another brother to me". Farrar said: "Wouter was one of the kindest, funniest, and most admirable people I have ever had the opportunity to know and his death is a tragedy to his family, his friends, and to the sport as a whole."

Yesterdam, Giro d'Italia General Manager Angelo Zomegnan announced: ""We will turn off the music tomorrow afternoon. The podium celebration is cancelled and the tone will be solemn, just as it was today during the final 10 kilometres of this ill-fated stage. We will leave the racers from Leopard and everyone else the freedom to interpret tomorrow's stage as they see fit. We will respect any decision they make."

Weylandt's team-mate Frank Schleck, who is not racing the Giro, no doubt watched that tribute live on television. Moments ago, Schleck tweeted: "Not only we lost a teammate but a friend. Speechless. Sadness. Tears. All condolence to his family. We'll never forget you Wouter."

The peloton gathered at the start of today's stage and paid their respects to Wouter Weylandt with a minute's silence, the eight remaining Leopard Trek riders in a line on the front. Many of the peloton were seen attaching black pieces of material to their arms of their jerseys with safety pins.

Headline of today's Gazzetta dello Sport, the official paper of the race: "The Giro Cries". The paper's website also carries a video of Wouter Weylandt's partner Anne Sophie leaving the team hotel with flowers. Yesterday it was reported that she is due to give birth in September.

After a tribute to Weylandt at the start today, teams will take turns on the front of the peloton before - in all likelihood - the Belgian's Leopard Trek team-mates will cross the line together in Livorno.

For those of you still in the dark, Belgian rider Weylandt was killed after a crash on Monday. The 26-year-old Leopard Trek sprinter crashed heavily on the descent of the third-category Passo del Bocco climb, 25km from the finish in Rapallo. Race director Angelo Zomegnan has confirmed that the 216km stage from Genova to Livorno will be neutralised.
