Tom Dumoulin, the defending champion, finished just outside the top 10 and so will be the best past of one minute clear of his rival Froome after just four stages of the race.

And confirmation from Team Sky that Chris Froome lost time today - 23 seconds to be precise...

Here's the confirmed top ten - and it was Battaglin, not Bennett, who was there for LottoNL-Jumbo. He took third with Yates in fourth ahead of Formolo.

To be confirmed but it seems like Froome was caught out in that split and will lose time today. The Sky rider is having a shocking race so far, to be fair.

CRASH: One or two riders overcook a bend and skid into the crowds. It looks like Max Schachmann, the white jersey from Quick-Step.

It's all over for Valerio Conti who is swept up with 3.2km remaining. Tosh van der Sandre takes it up for Lotto-FixAll with Simon Yates just behind.

Woods and Aru are right on the front now for EF-Education First and UAE. No sign of Froome or Sky so perhaps the Briton was held up in that crash earlier...

Three riders on the front now for Mitchelton-Scott as they bear down on Conti, who is on to a slight downhill section in the old town.
5km
The road twists and turns its way up onto the town here - it's highly technical and bad placement could see riders drop back many places in the pack. Less than 10 seconds now for Conti...

Conti has 10 seconds now on the select part of the peloton, which split after that ballooning of the road and resultant crash.

This is the first big GC showdown and it's getting quite fantic... oh, and CRASH! The road narrows and Andrei Zeits of Astana clips his handlebars on the barriers just at the pinch point. The blockage will have caught out the badly placed riders in the pack...

Zardini has been caught just as Pozzovivo and Yates make their way up for Bahrain Merida and Mitchelton-Scott.
