TADEJ POGACAR: WHEN I GOT CRAMP I THOUGHT THAT WAS IT

I tried to attack on the climb but actually Vlasov was one of the strongest. I knew the climb really well and I didn't give up until the top. I was hoping that me and Aleksandr would go one by one to the finish, that we collaborate to the finish line, but they came from behind pretty good, the other competitors. So it was just in the moment that I got a little gap. I knew the descent much better than two years ago - two years ago was a bit of a disaster! - but today I gave it all. It was tough to go so far to the finish. Today was a super hard race.

When I got cramp I was thinking that's it but I pushed through. I lowered down the power, and focussed on being as aero as possible to save myself for the final kick. I hoped that behind there would not be such a good collaboration, which there probably wasn't because I was gaining but I was not going so fast.

To win the third time... second time here in Bergamo. It's a dream.I was enjoying the last few kilometres, even if it was so so painful. It's incredible.

TADEJ POGACAR WINS IL LOMBARDIA 2023!
In a shade under six hours, it's a hat trick for Pogacar. He joins Fausto Coppi and Alfredo Binda as a three in a row champion. He's also only the second rider to win Flanders and Lombardy in the same season. He had plenty of time to take it in as the finishline neared. He knows he's done something special, we know we've watched it.

FLAMME ROUGE: POGACAR HEADS FOR THE BERGAMO FINISH LINE

3KM TO GO: ROGLIC AND CARAPAZ DROPPED

The podium will be between Rodriguez, Bagioli, Yates and Vlasov. Because Pogacar has this sewn up.

4KM TO GO: POGACAR THROUGH A WALL OF SPECTATORS AT PINOT CORNER
They're thick, and making a huge amount of noise, leaving barely enough room for him but he presses on. Victory almost but not quite, yet, in sight.

5KM TO GO: POGACAR LEAVING IT ALL OUT ON THE ROAD
And while those behind him fanny about, he is going to hit the short final climb, the Colle Aperto, with more than a minute's lead. The only real question now is whether Adam Yates can make it a 1-2.

8KM TO GO: POGACAR LOOKING A BIT BETTER NOW
A few seconds had come off his lead, and the chasers seemed to have renewed motivation, but he appears to be back on track, as he comes into Bergamo.

10KM TO GO: MARC HIRSCHI CRASHES
Very weird one that. In the Evenepoel group that seems to be coming back to the main chasers, the Swiss rider was chatting when he just lost concentration and drifted into the Belgian's wheel.
15:21
12KM TO GO: POGACAR ON THE RADIO
And immediately clutches his left thigh. Surely he's not going to be beaten by a case of cramp? There's nothing the teamcar can do for him now.
15:19
14KM TO GO: CARAPAZ JOINS THE SIX
And makes it seven. Either he's ridden well, or the others have simply not gone fast enough. Well, we know they haven't, don't we. 43 seconds to Pogacar. This is almost over.
15:16
15KM TO GO: THE PURSUIT NEEDS TO PURSUE
But as it stands, they're only losing ground. Now they're all on the flat, if they sort themselves out, commit to work together, they should be able to do it. But how many times have we said that. Pogacar's task is perfectly straightforward - ride.

20KM TO GO: SWITCHBACKS GALORE
And we think Pogacar has twenty seconds, or thereabouts, to look after. He'd still have a good chance if the group does get back to him, but at that point you'd think it was advantage Adam Yates. Tell you what, Pogacar is descending very well.
15:06
25KM TO GO: WHAT'S ROGLIC'S GAMEPLAN?
He let all the wheels go, but has made it back to the group. It's hard to tell if he doesn't have good legs or if he's just trying to make them think he doesn't. Dan Lloyd questions whether Pogacar deliberately went solo, or if he was trying to break it a bit and it's just happened. The time gap says 30 seconds but it's less than that.

30KM TO GO: POGACAR STEALING A MARCH BEFORE THE DESCENT PROPER
And with team-mate Adam making it onto the group behind, UAE Emirates are in a great position.
14:58
31KM TO GO: ROGLIC REELING IN VLASOV AND POGACAR

He makes one big effort before the top and tags onto the pair just when he needed to. Very well played by the older Slovenian. Bagioli and Simon Yates are just able to join them onto the descent as well.
14:54
33KM TO GO: POGACAR DECIDES THE TIME IS NOW
It's not an amplified accelertion but it's enough to put others into difficulty. Vlasov is the only rider able to properly stay with him, while Roglic, Carapaz etc has some work to do to get back on terms. The Giro d'Italia champion was isolated but doesn't look troubled. He's just doing his thing and not allowing the race to get away from him.
14:47
35KM TO GO: WHO'S IN THIS FINAL SELECTION?
There are ten of them, but the names you need are Simon Yates, Tadej Pogacar, Primoz Roglic, Richard Carapaz, Aleksandr Vlasov, Carlos Rodriguez and Mike Woods. Pogacar and Roglic are clearly only concerned about each other. Could this present an opportunity for one of the others?
14:45
37KM TO GO: HEALY CAUGHT BY THE YATES LED GROUP
The boy from Bury brings Tadej Pogacar and Primoz Roglic across to the front. We're into one of our final phases of this race. Bagioli and Fausto Masnada the last riders left for Soudal Quickstep.
14:44
38KM TO GO: ADAM YATES ACCELERATES WITH JULIAN ALAPHILIPPE
The Frenchman's leader, Remco Evenepoel, is struggling off the back of the bunch. Don't rule him out just yet, though.
