There was an unexpected winner of the 2023 Milano-Torino with Dutchman Arvid de Kleijn and his Tudor Pro team taking the spoils ahead of a number of more high-profile riders. A messy bunch sprint saw the team free up their man for a lunge to the line ahead of Fernando Gaviria (Movistar) and Casper Van Uden (DSM) in second and third respectively.

'Tudor have taken a big boy's race' - De Kleijn causes huge Milano-Torino upset

Arvid de Kleijn (Tudor Pro) pulled off a huge shock at the 2023 Milano-Torino in a chaotic bunch sprint.
The race, considered the oldest in the world, saw a new winner and the Dutchman from the young team upset some huge names such as Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan), Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates) and Peter Segan (TotalEnergies).
Fernando Gaviria (Movistar) finished second and Casper Van Uden (DSM) completed the podium coming in third.
The final 5km was messy concoction of riders with a series of roundabouts and turns not allowing any team to immediately fashion an effective move.
Eventually DSM and Tudor riders jostled for position as they headed for the line, with Van Uden attempting to launch in the final 200 meters.
However, the Tudor lead-out was played to perfection with De Kleijn hitting the front and closing out a narrow gap by the barriers as Gaviria looked to snatch the win late on.
But it was the underdogs who took it and De Kleijn securing just his sixth career win.
“I feel great, I feel really great,” he said afterwards. “The team did an amazing job to put me in a good position and when I went through the 300m corner, I knew I was going to win, I felt it.
“Everyone around me says I’m capable of winning so you believe it yourself. You have a good group of guys surrounding you. At the end I felt I can win here.
“It’s great [to beat the big riders]. We have a good thing going on with this team, a good lead out and we showed it today, that we’re capable of doing crazy stuff.”
