81KM TO GO: A NEW POLKA DOT JERSEY TODAY
Despite his best efforts, Neilson Powless didn't manage to get in the breakaway today - but two of his EF team-mates - Rigo Uran and Esteban Chaves - are there. Could one of the Colombian duo be in polka dots this evening? Quite possibly given the 20pts up for grabs over the Soudet, and 12pts between the next two climbs.
Quinn Simmons, meanwhile, has been dropped by the pack. He's in a world of pain following his high-speed crash earlier today. Matteo Trentin is also off the back after his earlier work for UAE team-mates Pogacar and Yates.

83KM TO GO: GAP GROWS FOR BREAK
The two leaders - Van Aert and Campenaerts - are still only 25 seconds clear of the break, but the pace behind has seen the peloton drop to over three minutes in arrears. Many riders have been shelled out the back of the pack now, including Jakobsen, who rides with all five Soudal riders who do not feature up the road. Victor Lafay, who won on Sunday and then enjoyed two days in green, has also been dropped, ditto Biniam Girmay and many others.

85KM TO GO: PEDERSEN DROPPED
It's game over for the Dane who is dropped by Van Aert and Campenaerts - and quickly caught by the break, which is now being led by Alaphilippe, who really has the bit between his teeth today. Will we see the swashbuckling Frenchman end his two-year wait for a Tour stage win in Laruns? Possibly... There are far stronger climbers in this break - Hindley, Ciccone, Gall, Lopez, Soler, to name but a handful - but few better descenders than Alaphilippe.

86KM TO GO: MECHANICAL ISSUE FOR POGACAR
The white jersey is off the back and alongside that man Cavendish after a mechanical stop. Pogacar is quickly on his way and bids farewell to Cav as he dances back towards the peloton. No drama for the double champion.

88KM TO GO: CAVAGNA UPS THE PACE
Julian Alaphilippe has called on his Soudal-QuickStep team-mate Remi Cavagna to up the tempo in the main breakaway. The Frenchman's acceleration sees the trio's lead come down to 30 seconds, with the peloton a further two minutes back. Mark Cavendish has just been dropped alongside Astana team-mate Cees Bol. It's going to be damage limitation now for Cav, who yesterday lost team-mate Luis Leon Sanchez, a key component of his lead-out train.

OPINION: TIME FOR A CARD SYSTEM IN PRO CYCLING?
Mathieu van der Poel was relegated and fined by the UCI for "deviating from line during the final sprint" during the end to Stage 4 at the Tour de France on Tuesday. But given his manoeuvre helped deliver Alpecin-Deceuninck team-mate Jasper Philipsen a second straight victory, was it a suitable punishment? And would introducing yellow and red cards create a safer sport?

90KM TO GO: CAT.HC COL DE SOUDET
The leaders are onto today's big test, which is 15.2km long at an average gradient of 7%. They have just under one minute on the break, which is being driven by Bora's Patrick Konrad, paving the way for a possible attack from Jai Hindley, the big GC dangerman in the move. The peloton is still 2'45" down.

96KM TO GO: JAKOBSEN STOIC ON TODAY'S TEST
Fabio Jakobsen was dropped early on today but appears to have fought his way back into the peloton after the breakaway finally went. The Dutchman crashed yesterday and he was matter-of-fact this morning when talking to Eurosport at the start.

99KM TO GO: THE ROAD STARTS TO HEAD UPHILL
We're now officially into the Pyrenees and the gradient is edging upwards - even if the official start of the Col de Soudet is not for another 5-10km. UAE have put Trentin and Laengen on the front of the pack ahead of the Jumbo and Groupama trains, with Yates, Pogacar, Bjerg and Majka riding a bit further back. Remember, they have Grossschartner and Soler up the road in the break. Then again, Vingegaard's Jumbo have Van Aert, Laporte and Benoot up there too.

102KM TO GO: GAP GROWS FOR TRIO
Which is what you would expect given the terrain - currently flat - and the characteristics of the leaders, who are all powerful rouleurs and TT specialists. The advantage is over one minute now for Van Aert, Pedersen and Campenaerts, with the main peloton riding at 2'45". There's been a brief lull in proceedings before the Col de Soudet, which is where it will all kick off.
Quinn Simmons, meanwhile, is receiving some attention from the race doctor. He has cuts, bruises, grazes and gashes all over him - and his fetching Captain America kit has been torn to shreds following that earlier crash. Let's hope he's okay to continue.

110KM TO GO: COQUARD DROPS BACK
The Frenchman has return to the rest of the main break after his sprint cameo. That leaves a trio of Van Aert, Pedersen and Campenaerts out ahead with 30 seconds on the chasers, who have two minutes over the pack. It's a fascinating state of play ahead of the first HC climb of the Tour. UAE may have two men in the break, but the presence of Hindley in the break has forced them to lead the chase for Pogacar and Yates with their remaining domestiques.

113.5KM TO GO: COQUARD WINS INTERMEDIATE SPRINT
It's Mads Pedersen who leads it out but the Dane is rounded by France's Bryan Coquard on the uphill rise and it's the Cofidis man who pockets the 20pts in the sprint at Lanne-en-Baretous. That will put Coquard into second place in the green jersey standings - up to 84pts. Still somewhat shy of Jasper Philipsen's leading tally of 150pts.

118KM TO GO: FOUR ZIP CLEAR AHEAD OF INTERMEDIATE SPRINT
Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma), Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek), Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and Victor Campenaerts (Lotto Dstny) have opened up a 10-second gap over the rest of the breakaway ahead of the intermediate sprint. The peloton is 2'10" down.

120KM TO GO: VAN AERT THE VIRTUAL YELLOW JERSEY
Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) is the best placed rider in this huge breakaway. The Belgian is currently just 16 seconds down on Adam Yates on GC and so he rides as the virtual yellow jersey for now. But it's Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) who is the big GC dangerman. The Australian is 22 seconds down and it's his presence in the break that has seen UAE come to the front of the pack to lead the chase.

122KM TO GO: GAP INCREASES FOR 36 LEADERS
The gap is up to 1'45" for this move which, after a slight lull moments earlier, is now combining well. 126KM TO GO: CRASH! QUINN SIMMONS HITS THE DECK
It's all happening today. We take a break from the breakaway to report that the American champion has hit the deck at speed back in the pack - and that was a really nasty one. He has cuts and gashes all over, especially on his shoulder and hip. He's back on his bike quite soon, but he's really badly knocked up and will face a real struggle to return to the peloton.

130KM TO GO: HINDLEY IN THIS MOVE
The 2022 Giro d'Italia champion Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) is the big dangerman in this breakaway - and the Australian has his German team-mate Emanuel Buchmann with him. This is really interesting. Jumbo-Visma have three riders in Van Aert, Laporte and Benoot, while UAE Team Emirates have Grossschartner and Soler. This is fascinating...
