Tour de France 2023: Teams and riders for the 110th edition of the Grand Tour as Chris Froome misses out

With the 110th edition of the Grand Tour fast approaching, Tour de France teams have now finalised their rider line-ups ahead of the July 3 start in Bilbao. Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard faces another stern challenge from two-time winner Tadej Pogacar. Elsewhere, Mark Cavendish is chasing Grand Tour history, while fellow British rider Chris Froome has not been selected for this year's race.

The 110th edition of the Tour de France is fast approaching and the excitement is building for the most prestigious cycling race in the world.

This year's route starts in Bilbao, Spain, on July 1 and culminates with the final stage on July 23, the traditional finish through the cobbled streets of the Champs-Elysees.

Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard will be hoping to retain his yellow jersey, while two-time winner Tadej Pogacar will be desperate to dethrone his Danish rival after missing out last year.

Four-time Grand Tour winner Chris Froome is the headline British omission from this year's peloton.

Froome recently said competing at the Tour remained his "ultimate goal", but there was no place for the 38-year-old in Israel Premier Tech's eight-man team.

In a statement given to GCN, Froome said: “I’m obviously disappointed with the decision. The Tour de France holds an incredibly special place in my heart.”

He added: “I respect the team’s decision and will take some time before refocusing on objectives later in the season and returning to the Tour de France in 2024.”

British interest could now rest on the likes of likely Tour riders Tom Pidcock, Adam Yates, Simon Yates and Mark Cavendish, with the latter aiming to create history in what could be his final appearance at the famous race.

Cavendish needs just one more stage victory to break cycling legend Eddy Merckx's all-time record of 34.

Speaking at the teams presentation in Bilbao, Cavendish said he is already happy with his current number of wins, but would be "even more happy" if he could triumph one more time.

The 38-year-old was controversially omitted from the Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team for the 2022 edition of the race before signing with current team Astana Qazaqstan earlier this year.
