And here's Chris Froome, who almost catches Omar Fraile before coming over the line 2:39 down on the winner, Brambilla. Add the bonus seconds for second place and Quintana will be almost four minutes ahead today.

Under the flamme rouge for the two leaders... behind, Froome is rallying on the front of his chasing group.

Contador has already lost 15 seconds - he's pedalling squares despite the support from the home fans lining the road. And he's been caught and passed by Felline and Elissonde now...

More accelerations from Quintana. Brambilla can match him but Contador has slipped back a little... Further behind, Valverde has dropped Froome - who trails the leaders by 2:25 now.

Down to just three riders ahead: Quintana, Contador and Brambilla. Contador, who made this initial attack which split the field, looks to be struggling...

Froome is struggling now as numerous riders push on from this chasing group. He has Yates with him, but the latter looks fresher.

Now Mamykin has been dropped so we're down to seven at the front - although Felline and Formolo are feeling the pinch too.

Froome peels off and then misses a split that suddenly appears. He needs to fight back on - and does so - but he's still two minutes down on the leaders. Chaves is in this group as well, but no sign of Yates right now.

Impressive from the youngster Mamykin, who has come to the front behind Quintana in this eight-man leading group. Quintana looks super focused.

Now Froome comes to the front of this chasing group, with Valverde sandbagging in his wheel. They trail the leaders by 2:10.

The two Cannondale riders are back with Froome and the others as Valverde comes to the front of this chasing pack. Luis Angel Mate of Codifis them breaks clear and passes Trofimov, who has been caught from the break.

Quintana leads this break with Contador behind. The Spaniard then peels to the side to survey the scene and look back at who's still here...
