In the end Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) comes home with only about 12 seconds gain over the reduced pack behind - so all that effort came down to nothing for the Frenchman. But he'll be pleased with the form and the cooler weather - and gave his rivals a timely reminder that this race is far from over.

Jhonatan Restrepo (Katusha-Alpecin) comes home 28 seconds down for second place. Just under a minute down it's Franco Pellizotti (Bahrain Merida) who takes third place well ahead of Nans Peters of Ag2R-La Mondiale.

The rains stop for Alessandro De Marchi (BMC) who emerges from the clouds and into the sunshine as he crosses the line for a well earned victory.

Under the flamme rouge goes De Marchi and he's taking the corners very gingerly.

The sun is out but it's still raining as De Marchi hits the descent on steaming roads.
2.5km
De Marchi has 18 seconds as he hits the brow of the climb. Further back, Jack Haig has been swept up by the pack - which is down to about 20 riders now.
3km
Woods has been reeled back in by the pack, which is being led by Richard Carapaz of Movistar. They have caught Rolland, too, from the initial break.
3.5km
De Marchi is a double Vuelta stage winner from back in 2014 and 2015. It looks like he's going to complete his hat-trick three years on.
4km
De Marchi has dropped Restrepo on this sodden climb, while Michael Woods has ridden clear of the pack further down the hill. The peloton has blown apart in the wet - it's going to be a very sketchy run in. Who's going to be prepared to take the risks?
4.5km
The rain is really pounding down now as, behind, EF Education First-Drapac take over the reins from Movistar. They gap back is 2'30" now so Pinot won't be taking the red jersey today - but he could still put himself back into the GC frame.

The road is heading uphill again and De Marchi and Restrepo are combining well. Behind, Pellizotti has dropped Peters and rides solo in pursuit.

The final uncategorised climb is 2km of 8% and so it can make the difference. It's where Simon Yates attacked to secure his first Grand Tour stage win back in 2016.

It's thrillingly poised today - and BMC hold the cards with De Marchi out ahead and two riders in the chasing group.

Like the ascent, this descent is broken up into tiers and includes some uphill drags. The two leaders still have 50 seconds over the rest of the break. At the bottom of this descent the road rises again for two kilometres, then drops for another two, then goes uphill for the final kilometre until the line.

Meanwhile, back with the peloton it's Movistar and EF Education First who set the tempo as they crest the summit of the climb, with Team Sky also fairly prominent.
