One week ahead of the world championships in Italy, Jan Ullrich on Wednesday won the 197km Coppa Sabatini in and around the Tuscan town of Peccioli. Germany's most popular cyclist beat out Franco Pellizotti of Italy and Dutchman Michael Boogerd.

Ullrich, who's penciled in for both the September 30 men's elite individual time trial and the October 3 road race, will continue his preparation for Verona by taking part Saturday in the Giro dell'Emilio and Sunday in the Grand Prix Beghelli.
