Orhan Avcioğlu has demonstrated his first FIA European Rally Championship stage win on Rally Islas Canarias was no fluke by going third quickest in Rally di Roma Capitale’s opening test.
Turkish driver Avcioğlu, who races for his compatriots at Toksport WRT, held fastest time for much of Friday’s rally-opening superspecial.
Though he was eventually beaten to first by FIA ERC Junior U28 hotshot Nikolay Gryazin and Alexey Lukyanuk, who has won two rallies outright this year, Avcioğlu’s performance once again showed his adeptness in the slow, tricky roads of city superspecials.
"It was a little bit slippy at the start but after that, it went OK for us. It was quite a good run with no problems, so a good start to the rally,” said Avcioğlu.
“It's nice to get a grip for the handbrake turns. I'm going to be using the handbrake a lot [this weekend]."
Avcioğlu starts Saturday’s stages with only a 0.6s deficit to rally leader Gryazin, with 0.7s in hand over fourth placed Grzegorz Grzyb.
