Alexey Lukyanuk secured a calm yet emphatic victory at the FIA European Rally Championship’s opening round at Azores Airlines Rallye, beating local legend Ricardo Moura and 2017 championship runner-up Bruno Magalhães.

Lukyanuk led throughout, and though he lost over half a minute in the last stage with a suspected brake issue, it was still enough to hold Moura and Magalhães at bay, who complete the overall podium.

ERC Junior Under 28 ended with an extraordinary final twist, an extremely close battle between Chris Ingram and Martin Koči decided by ŠKODA Slovakia Motorsport driver Koči ripping a wheel off midway through the final stage.

That crash handed Fredrik Åhlin second place in ERC Junior U28 in only his second ERC start, heading similarly green Rhys Yates who rounded out the class podium.

Following an SS8 stage time adjustment for Mārtiņš Sesks, local driver Diogo Gago holds a lead of over one minute ahead of Mārtiņš Sesks and Efrén Llarena in ERC Junior Under 27 after SS14.

Juan Carlos Alonso looks set to clinch victory in ERC2, holding a 31 second advantage over Sergei Remennik after SS14.
