Alexey Lukyanuk continues to lead the FIA European Rally Championship classification on Rally di Roma Capitale, but two-time ERC champion Giandomenico Basso is closing in on his lead.
Two of Lukyanuk’s closest rivals fell by the wayside, Nikolay Gryazin suffering a fire and power steering failure on Saturday morning and Simone Campedelli running out of tyres from multiple punctures in the afternoon loop.

This allowed Basso to establish himself as Lukyanuk’s main challenger. Lukyanuk carried a rear roll-bar failure throughout Saturday’s afternoon loop which allowed Basso to close in further, despite driving an unfamiliar car with a new co-driver.

Lukyanuk and Basso are now separated by 17.1s with only Saturday evening’s 2.54 kilometre Pico Superstage remaining of Leg One.

As punctures caused a dramatic shake-up in stages five and six, a level-headed drive from ERC Junior Under 28 category leader Fabian Kreim has catapulted him up to an overall podium.

He took advantage of Gryazin’s morning troubles and a puncture sustained by previous ERC Junior U28 leader Chris Ingram to establish a 1m25.8s lead after stage seven, though Kreim has only 0.6s in hand over fourth placed Grzegorz Grzyb overall.

Local rally legend Paolo Andreucci is fifth after seven stages, running first of the road and avoiding problems which had befallen those running behind him. He was unable to resist the pace of those behind, falling behind Kreim and Grzyb on pace during Saturday afternoon’s loop.

SEAJETS-backed championship leader Bruno Magalhães is sixth, followed by a deliberately cautious Juuso Nordgren in seventh, a recovering Ingram in eighth, CA1 Sport’s Fredrik Åhlin ninth and Ingram’s Toksport WRT team-mate Orahn Avcioğlu P10.
