Rally legend Carlos Sainz reckons the return of Rally Islas Canarias El Corte Inglés to the ERC schedule for 2016 is “good for Spain”.
Sainz, currently in Argentina preparing for the start of the Dakar Rally, dominated the island contest between 1985 and 1989, making him the most successful driver in the event’s history.
“Canarias is the place in Spain where you’ll find the most rally fans: all over the islands there is a really big passion for motorsport,” said Sainz. “I don’t know why exactly, but it’s always been the case so I always enjoyed competing there. To have the rally back in the European championship is really good news for Spain, so I’m sure it will be another very nice rally.”
Rally Islas Canarias, run entirely on asphalt, is the second event on the FIA European Rally Championship schedule for 2016. It’s scheduled to run from 10-12 March.
