Thrilling finale: Hadik wins new ERC rally, takes title*

Home crew András Hadik and Attila Deák had double reason for celebration at the finish of the Nyíregyháza Rally.
Not only did they win the event, which is set to join the FIA European Rally Championship in 2019 under its new name, Rally Hungary, they also claimed their first national title.
By winning Saturday’s leg and claiming 10 fastest stage times out of a possible 17 – including the power stage – the Ford Fiesta R5 duo beat Frigyes Turán and László Bagaméri to the Hungarian championship by a single point in a dramatic conclusion to the 2018 season.
“A simple victory was not enough for us, we had to win one of the days,” said Hadik, whose winning margin was a comfortable 37.8s. “We did it yesterday and even [won] the power stage so both brought extra points. When I got to the start of the last stage I knew that this stage suited us and we could win, although I was anxious about not to hit a tyre chicane, because the penalty could destroy everything. I did not drive at the limit but we did not lose more than one second at the stage. I started my career in 1992 with a Trabant so I have waited for this day for quite long time. It is a dream comes true and it is an awesome feeling.”
Behind Turán, Ferenc Vincze completed the podium and also claimed third in the final championship stanings. Two-time champion Miklós Kazár finished fourth with Tibor Érdi Jr, the provisional double FIA ERC2 champion, finishing his first asphalt rally in his newly-acquired ŠKODA Fabia R5, which was also his first event with co-driver Szabi Kovács. “We produced second and third times overall but I can see many things to improve.”
