Egypt sneaked into the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations on a night of crazy drama in Group B.

There were four injury-time goals across the two Group B games, with Mozambique scoring twice to draw 2-2 with Ghana.

That meant a draw was enough for Egypt to finish second and qualify – but many of their players didn’t know the Ghana score and were crestfallen when Cabo Verde equalised in the 99th minute.

Despite dominating the first half, Egypt went behind to a clinical finish from Gilson Tavares just before the break. The half-time substitute Trezeguet equalised almost immediately with a beautifully worked goal, and Egypt pushed for the winner that would guarantee a place in the knockout stages.

They thought they had found it when Mostafa Mohamed lobbed coolly over Vozinha in the 91st minute, but the drama was only beginning. There was a VAR check for handball against Mohamed, with the referee going to the monitor before awarding the goal.

Some of the Egypt players were on the cusp of tears at that point. A few more joined them, for very different reasons, when Bryan Teixeira scored a nonchalant equaliser. But the final whistle brought confirmation of Ghana’s result, and the sweetest relief for Egypt.

Egypt sneak into the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations on a night of crazy drama in Group B. That was spectacular.

The goalkeeper Elshenaway was injured while trying to stop that goal, so now he's being replaced.

There were only supposed to be six added minutes...

Cabo Verde have equalised in the ninth added minute! It won't affect Egypt's progress - they are guaranteed to finish second in the group - but it's another twist on a night of absurd drama.

Willy Semedo's cross was pushed away to the substitute Teixeira, who walked calmly round the keeper to score form a tight angle.

The Egypt players look devastated; they have no idea that they are going through. This is bonkers.

Mo Salah is telling his teammates that it's 2-2 in the other game. No matter: the referee has awarded the goal! Trezeguet is almost in tears and the entire Egypt bench are going wild.

Nobody realises that Mozambique have scored twice, so this VAR check is academic unless there is a fifth goal in the other game.

Did Mohamed handle the ball before lobbing it into the net? I think it came off his chest, but his arm was outstretched.

Meanwhile, Mozambique have scored twice in injury time to draw level with Ghana, so as things stand it doesn't matter when Mohamed's goal is disallowed or not.

Egypt are into the last 16! Trezeguet's long ball forward found its way through to Mostafa Mohamed, who lobbed the ball calmly over Vozinha! That's such a cool finish under pressure.

Kahraba misses his kick in the six-yard box! My word, what a chance that was. Meanwhile Mozambique have pulled one back against Ghana.

A goal would put Egypy through to the last 16, but a Cabo Verde goal might put them out.

Ashour's surges forward from midfield and pings a sweet rising drive from 20 yards. Vozinha leaps to make a dramatic save, fingertipping the ball over the bar. That's his best save of the night.

A corner is headed back across goal by Costa to the substitute Teixeira, who heads straight at the keeper from eight yards. That was a brilliant chance.

Ashour's lovely touch releases Trezeguet, whose fast low cross is screwed wide of the near post by Mohamed. It was a sharp chance, but still a pretty good one.

Omar Marmoush is replaced by Mustafa Fathi.

A cross from the right is claimed confidently by Vozinha. In truth this result should be okay for Egypt, who are already ahead of one of the third-placed teams - the hosts Ivory Coast, who were battered 4-0 by Equatorial Guinea earlier today. But there are no guarantees, so Egypt will have a nervous 48-hour wait if it stays like this.

This is the real cooling break; the earlier one was an unofficial affair when the Cabo Verde defender was down.
