Jupp Heynckes has revealed that three recent death threats he received were the reason behind his decision to step down as coach of Borussia Moenchengladbach.
The 61-year-old threw in the towel after his side's goalless draw at home to Nuernberg, a result that left the club second-from bottom of the league, though he insisted his decision was not taken for footballing reasons.
"In the last two months I have received three death threats. They had to be taken so seriously, that I was accompanied by undercover police officers in Bochum and Cottbus," he told the Rheinischen Post.
"My decision had already been made [before the Nuremberg match]. The board of directors tried to persuade me to stay on Wednesday after I had told them my decision of a final one. But I have thought through my decision.
"It has been a difficult one, as my heart beats for Borussia, and I believe the club is on the way up. With this board of directors, the club can really go places," he added.
