Chamakh, 32, is reunited with new Cardiff boss Neil Warnock, who was manager at Crystal Palace during the Morocco international's spell with the London club.
Former Arsenal striker Chamakh is the Bluebirds' third signing since Warnock replaced Paul Trollope six days ago. Junior Hoilett and Sol Bamba arrived on Monday and earlier on Tuesday respectively.
"I'm so happy to be here and work with the manager again," Chamakh told Cardiff's official website.
"I worked for him at Crystal Palace before and I'm happy and proud to work with him here at Cardiff City FC.
"Cardiff are a side that should be on top and I think we can improve going forward. I'm looking forward to meeting with my new team-mates and getting started. I can't wait to score for my new team."
Chamakh, who has 65 international caps, scored 14 goals in 67 appearances during a three-year stay at Arsenal before signing for Palace in August 2013. He scored 10 goals in 65 appearances for the Eagles and has also spent time on loan at West Ham.
Warnock added: "We've signed Marouane on a short-term deal until January to assess his fitness.
"He's a versatile player with pedigree and somebody who impressed me during my time at Crystal Palace."
