Basel are currently fifth in the Swiss Super League, with five wins in the 11 games they have played so far. Star playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri returns to the side after serving a two match European ban, as does central midfielder Benjamin Huggel.

Benfica are currently undefeated in the Portuguese First Division, and top the table alongside Porto with 17 points after seven games.

Basel earned a 5-1 cup victory over FC Schotz on Saturday, while Benfica were resounding 4-1 winners against Pacos de Ferreira in the Portuguese league.

Basel head their Champions League group after two rounds of games - on goals scored from Benfica, and by two points from United.

The Swiss had almost claimed the scalp of Manchester United in their last Champions League outing, coming back from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 before Ashley Young’s late effort salvaged a point for the Red Devils.

Vogel makes his Champions League bow as a manager when Basel take on Benfica in Group C.
