It seems early to label this encounter as crucial, but after a surprise defeat in Eindhoven in their opener, United will want to get some points on the board, or they’ll end up falling behind. Plus, there is that Premier League reputation to consider after yet another bashing last night…

FT: Manchester United 2-1 Wolfsburg. Great entertainment. Crucial win for United, but it was certainly hard-fought. Chris Smalling is the unlikely match-winner, and was superb all evening. Daniel Caligiuri gave the visitors a perfect start inside four minutes, before Juan Mata levelled from the penalty spot. Not easy on the night, but Louis van Gaal won't be complaining. With City winning in Germany, the Premier League's reputation has been saved by the Manchester duo.

Free-kick to United, which they are in no rush to take. Pereira fires straight into the wall.

In it goes towards Bendtner, but Smalling heads clear. Martial carries the ball forward on the break, but he cannot get the shot away.

Three added minutes. It is a great result if they can hold it, but United are playing a high risk game sitting so deep.

Excellent pressing from United to keep Wolfsburg in their own half. Rooney chased it down well, and Darmian makes the tackle.

CLOSE! After a long delay, Rodriguez curls the free-kick over the wall, but it flies just past the post. De Gea was across, and had it covered.

United really poor on the ball. Schneiderlin makes the foul, and concedes a free-kick on the edge of the box. Fortunate not to get another yellow and be sent off.

Lack of composure is disappointing from United. Just hoofing the ball forward to Martial whenever they get it.
