Simeone's side are having more of the ball, Vrsaljko makes a brilliant run down the right before being tackled as he was about to send in a cross.

The visitors have a corner after Carrasco's low cross is blocked. The delivery is a comfortable one for the keeper to gather though.

Leverkusen have been passing it around confidently, Atletico look content to soak up the pressure then launch the counter attack.

Bellarabi is fortunate to avoid a booking for a strong challenge on Luis, there have been some tasty tackles already.

The visitors have a promising swift counter attack but Saul's pass is poor and is cut out, you can see Simeone's game plan from that move.

Promising move from the hosts, the ball comes out to Bellarabi on the wing but he skews the cross and it goes out for a goal-kick.

All eyes will be on teenager Havertz, who impressed against Augsburg at the weekend. Leverkusen will be hoping he can plug the gap left by the suspension of Hakan Calhanoglu.

Atletico, who are fourth in La Liga, won their Champions League group while the German side, who are eighth in the Bundesliga, finished second in their group to Monaco.

Simeone has also pointed to the qualities of Chicharito as the man they need to stop: "Leverkusen are a very strong side, particularly down the wings with Karim Bellarabi and Kai Havertz. Up front they have Javier 'Chicharito' Hernández, who is in fine form. However they line up, they will be looking to make life as tough as possible for us. We're playing against a team with great intensity, but we have great intensity too."

Roger Schmidt said his side's hopes rest on the in-form Chicharito: "We go into the game with a lot of confidence – we're looking forward to it. As far as I recall, we were unlucky to lose to Atlético at this stage two seasons ago. We need to make sure we make the right decisions in the final third in order to get a positive result. In games like this, it's very important to have a player who can stick the ball in the back of the net, and Javier Hernández has been doing that for us of late."

The Spanish side have lost on their last three visits to Germany but beat Leverkusen 3-2 on penalties three years ago, a game which Schmidt has said his team were unlucky to lose.
