Monaco and Manchester City delivered another wonderful game; this time, Monaco stayed in it until the end, moving into the quarter-finals on away goals.
The first half was all Monaco. Fabinho, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Bernardo Silva dominated midfield, while Kylian Mbappe was a constant threat up-front. And it was he who opened the scoring on seven minutes, slipping home from close range after Silva's cross.
Still, City could not get anything going, and on 27 minutes, Monaco put themselves ahead in the tie. Again, the goal came from their left flank, Thomas Lemar feeding the excellent Benjamin Mendy, and his cross was expertly tucked away by Fabinho.
City were much improved after half-time, pushing their fullbacks higher up the pitch to get their wingers into the game, while in midfield, David Silva began to twinkle. But they missed a succession of chances, Sergio Aguero the main culprit, before, on 71 minutes, they forced themselves ahead once more, Leroy Sane first to react after Danijel Subasic palmed away Raheem Sterling's shot.
Somehow, though, Monaco composed themselves and came again. Though they had barely threatened since the break, they won a free-kick, swung in by Lemar, and when Aleksandr Kolarov misjudged its flight and Willy Caballero chose not to come, Bakayoko powered in what proved to be the winner.
It will be of no comfort to City that they participated in a classic tie, and one which boasts more goals than any other in Champions League history. They will have to explain their first-half no-show, and Pep Guardiola will have to explain why he has failed to coach any improvement out of his defence. As for Monaco, though they have their faults, no side will fancy meeting their attack in the last eight.

TALKING POINT

Can Monaco's midfielders be more savvy? In both legs against City, Monaco were brilliant in the first half, thanks in significant part to the running, power, skill and nous of Fabinho, Bakayoko and Bernardo Silva. But all three also vanished in both second halves, perhaps spent after the effort they'd put in, almost costing their team the tie; there is a happy medium, and they must find it.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Kylian Mbappe (Monaco) Though he did nothing in the second half, he terrorised City's back-four in the first, scoring one, having another disallowed, and generally using his pace and movement to run them ragged. He is going to be a star.

KEY MOMENTS

7’ - GOAL! Monaco 1-0 Manchester City (Mbappe) agg 4-5 Monaco have started like they mean it; first, Caballero blocks Mbappe, before Mendy powers between tame challenges from Sane and Aguero - his cross is blocked back out wide by Kolarov. But Bernanrdo Silva, now on the left, is lurking, he drills across - there are two men on the line in offside positions - but before it gets to them, Mbappe slips it home, and Monaco are halfway there. Or, as Peter Drury might exclaim, "BASE CAMP!”

29’ - GOAL! Monaco 2-0 Manchester City (Fabinho) agg 5-5 This is another very well-crafted goal, and Monaco lead on away goals! Lemar runs around the left flank and plays in Mendy, who zips back a cross from the by-line for Fabinho to tuck home with ease.

62’ - The first flash of Sane, turning on the gas to skirt Raggi and screech into the box. He too looks the keeper in the eyes before opting to square for Aguero, but pressure from Jemerson forces him to stab over the top from four yards! This is a serious game now.

65’ - Great save Subasic! Fernandinho stabs an excellent pass for Silva, and he takes it inside the box, turns, and slides square for Aguero. But again, pressure forces him to shoot early, and Subasic pokes out a foot to deflect behind. The corner comes to nothing.

67’ - City simply cannot score! Silva slides yet another pass, this time between Sidibe and Raggi, for Sane. He dashes into the box, and this time opts for the acute angle, his shot scooshing just wide.

71’ - GOAL! Monaco 2-1 Manchester City (Sane) agg 5-6 De Bruyne spreads a brilliant pass out wide to Sterling, but even so, there's nothing on until his first touch takes him into the box and across the face of the back-four. He shoots low, and Subasic dives to push it away, but while Sidibe and Fabinho ponder the iniquities of the modern world, Sane screams on to the loose ball and smacks a sidefooter into the roof of the net.

77’ - GOAL! Monaco 3-1 Manchester City (Bakayoko) agg 6-6 Monaco win a free-kick on the right after a clumsy challenge from De Bruyne, a fair bit in from the touchline and about 40 yards out. And Lemar's delivery is brilliant, over Kolarov, who leaves his man to attack the ball. So when Caballero doesn't come for it, Bakayoko contorts his neck to power a superb header back across goal and into the net! What a game! What a tie! Monaco lead on away goals once more!

KEY STATS

Kylian Mbappe has scored 11 goals in his last 11 games.
No side managed by Pep Guardiola has ever been eliminated from the Champions League as early as the last-16 - until now.
