Barcelona drop points for the first time in Group D as they are held to a goalless by bottom-side Olympiacos in Greece.
Three minutes shall be added on.
Barca win a corner which Rakitic takes, but Olympiacos can only partially clear. Messi is lined up for a shot, but Proto does well to get across and make the save.
Deulofeu gets to the by-line and tries to cut the ball back for a team mate, but Olympiacos manage to hack it clear.
- Yellow cardDiogo FigueirasOlympiacos
Figueiras is booked, though I'm not quite sure why.
Anyway, Messi curls a tame free-kick at goal but rather than catch it Proto chooses to punch it clear. Bizarre.
Messi is barged over by Romao and wins the free-kick, which is around 35 yards out. Surely too far out to have a shot?!
A dangerous cross is delivered into the Barca penalty box, but the visitors do well to clear.
The ball comes out to Tachtsidis who blazes over from the bar!
- OffKostas FortounisOlympiacos
- OnUroš DjurdjevicOlympiacos
Olympiacos make their third and final change: Djurdjevic takes the place of Fortounis.
Juventus have levelled at Sporting, it is now 1-1 there, meaning if Barcelona can grab a late winner they will secure their place in the last 16 tonight.
Suarez is growing increasingly desperate for a goal - he tries to knock the ball past Koutris inside the box but only ends up fouling the Olympiacos defender.
Now Suarez sees his goal-bound shot deflected wide for a corner!
Luis Suarez times his run to perfection to latch onto a long ball from Busquets in defence. He lobs the goalkeeper but the ball lands on top of the roof of the net!
- OffMehdi Carcela-GonzálezOlympiacos
- OnFelipe PardoOlympiacos
Another Olympiacos sub, Pardo replacing Carcela-Gonzales.
- Yellow cardAndré GomesFC Barcelona
Gomes has only been on the pitch a matter of moments and he is already shown a yellow card for a foul on Figueras.
- OffDenis SuárezFC Barcelona
- OnAndré GomesFC Barcelona
A second Barca change sees Andre Gomes taking the place of Denis Suarez who hasn't enjoyed the best of games.
- OffVadis Odjidja OfoeOlympiacos
- OnGuillaume GilletOlympiacos
Olympiacos make their first change: Gillet replacing Odjidja.
Suarez tries an ambitious over-head kick when the corner delivery comes his way, but the effort is well off target. It is almost like the Barca forward is trying too hard.
Better from Luis Suarez - he dribbles his way into the Olympiacos penalty area and is only denied by a crucial last-ditch tackle. He wins a corner.
We are into the final 20 minutes and the result remains scoreless. Olympiacos have defended like lion's this evening - if only they could improve in the final third.
Luis Suarez takes a heavy touch on the edge of the penalty area and Olympiacos can clear. Will Barcelona find a way through tonight?
The home supporters are making the most horrible high-pitched noise now when Barca are in possession. It is incredibly distracting.
Luis Suarez scuffs his shot, it ricochets into the path of Semedo who is flagged offside. It has been that kind of night...
Barcelona continue to dominate possession and the home supporters whistle their every touch. It is absolutely deafening!
It is not often Messi misses from such close range - perhaps it isn't going to be Barca's night?!
Luis Suarez breaks the penalty area and squares the ball to Messi who somehow pokes the ball wide of the goal from a few yards out with the goal gaping!
- OffPaulinhoFC Barcelona
- OnIvan RakiticFC Barcelona
Valverde makes his first change of the night: Rakitic takes the place of Paulinho.
Fortounis swings the free-kick delivery to the back post, and ter Stegen has to be at full stretch to push it behind for a corner.
Olympiacos are growing in confidence.
Barcelona clear from Olympiacos's corner, although they made hard work of it, and now Koutris wins a free-kick on the channel...
However, Sporting are currently leading Juventus by a goal to nil. What a shock that would be if the result didn't change.
Over 10 minutes have been played in the second period and Barca are yet to move into top gear. Remember, if the visitors win tonight and Sporting draw or lose, they will seal their place in the last 16 of the competition.
Barca win a free-kick which they play short to Deulofeu, but again his cross is over-hit.
Luis Suarez opts not to shoot when presented with a great opportunity, he instead passes to Denis Suarez who feeds Deulofeu, but his cross is turned behind for a corner.
Barcelona have won all three of their second halves this campaign, suggesting they will improve as the clock ticks on.
Proto made a grand total of nine saves in the last meeting between the sides a fortnight ago. He has enjoyed a much quieter match this evening - he has only been forced into action two, maybe three times.
Alba slips as he delivers a cross from the right and the ball sails out for a goal-kick. Barca's final delivery has been poor this evening.
I fully expect Deulofeu to provide an attacking threat down the channel in the second half - something the visitors missed in the first period. Messi was the only player to have any sort of impact in the opposition's final third.
Deulofeu, brought on as a substitute at the end of the first half for the injured Roberto, shows his lightening pace as he drives to the by-line but over-cooks his cross.
- 2nd Half
Barcelona get the second half underway. Valverde will be hoping for a much improved display from the Liga giants.
- End of 1st Half
HALF-TIME: Olympiacos 0-0 Barcelona.
- OffSergi RobertoFC Barcelona
- OnGerard DeulofeuFC Barcelona
Messi plays a weighted pass to Denis Suarez on the edge of the penalty area, but the Spaniard was in an offside position.
Meanwhile, Deulofeu replaces the injured Sergi Roberto.
One minute will be added on at the end of the first half.
Barcelona give the ball away needlessly in midfield - again. Valverde will be concerned by his side's first-half performance.
- Yellow cardSergi RobertoFC Barcelona
Sergi Roberto is shown a yellow card for a rather needless foul and may have injured his hamstring in the process.
The ball breaks to Koutris inside the Barca box and he selfishly goes for goal, blazing his shot well over the bar. It was the wrong option, he had team mates in better positions.
Olympiacos will sense they can get something from this game. Arguably, they have had the better chances.
Barca are caught sleeping at the back as a simple forward ball releases Fortounis, but he can only shoot straight at ter Stegen from inside the area. It was a difficult chance, to be fair.
- Yellow cardPanagiotis TachtsidisOlympiacos
The first booking is issued to Tachtsidis for a foul on Messi. The challenge angers Luis Suarez who is keen to get his point across to the Olympiacos defender.
Obviously Messi shoots, forcing Proto into an unconvincing save at his far post. But Barca's corner comes to nothing.
Chance for Barcelona as they win a free-kick from 30 yards out in a central area - Messi territory...
This is far from vintage Barcelona, they look very out of sorts and they are fortunate Fortounis didn't take his opportunity. Barca are giving the ball away far too often.
Busquets gifts possession to the host inside his own half! Olympiacos almost make him pay, too, as the ball is worked to Fortounis who volleys narrowly over from the edge of the penalty area.
Messi dribbles his way into the Olympiacos box - it's almost like the defenders are afraid to go near him - he launches a low shot but Proto does well to save with his feet.
Olympiacos fail to threaten from the set-piece, but the hosts will be pleased with the start they have made here.
Comical defending from Barca! There is a lack of communication between Umtiti and ter Stegen and they are forced to clear for a corner.
Suarez is definitely lacking confidence, it is very clear. A goal tonight would do him the world of good.
Suarez is released in the box, he tries to poke a shot with the outside of his right foot from a tight angle, but screws the ball wide of the target.
A well worked move right off the training ground almost results in an opener for Barca! Denis Suarez picks out Messi with a short corner delivery, the Argentine's shot is deflected but Proto does well to scramble it behind.
GOAL RULED OUT!
Messi releases Denis Suarez with a beautiful through ball and the Spaniard slides the ball past Proto - but he was marginally offside.
Looking at the replay, the referee probably made the right call. I think Umtiti got the ball, just.
Umtiti appears to clip Elabdellaoui from behind inside the box, but Anthony Taylor waves play on! Difficult to know if that was the right call...
Suarez has endured a slump in form this season, scoring only three goals in his opening 12 games. There appears something is not quite right with the Uruguayan.
Suarez lets Mascherano's pass run through his legs, but Messi wasn't quite on the same page and Olympiacos emerge with the ball.
Messi's corner delivery is catching practice for Proto who gathers with ease.
Sergi Roberto and Semedo link up beautifully on the channel, with the latter running onto the exchange pass. Only a perfectly timed tackle stops him, but Barca still win a corner.
Clever work from Fortounis sees the Olympiacos forward win his side a free-kick in the Barca half. It allows the home side to take a breather, if nothing else.
Barcelona have made a solid start to the game, keeping possession relatively comfortable and they look dangerous in the final third, too.
Paulinho plays a through ball to Suarez, but the Uruguayan was in offside position. He isn't happy, he wanted the ball played quicker and is letting the Brazilian know his feelings.
It could be a busy night for Olympiacos's goalkeeper, but he will need to deal with similar efforts more effectively. Proto was bailed out by his defender there.
Olympiacos are throwing players forward in search of an early opener and that is a risky strategy. They are caught short at the back as Messi finds Semedo free on the edge of the box but the full-back's shot is straight at Proto who can only parry the ball back into danger. Fortunately for him a defender clears.
- 1st Half
The home side gets the game underway.
The sea of red and white supporters in Stadio Karaiskak are making a tremendous atmosphere this evening.
Tonight's referee is Anthony Taylor, from Manchester.
This is fascinating...
There are only 10 minutes until kick off and I would love to read your predictions about tonight's game. It is difficult to look past Barca, isn't it?
Messi celebrated 100 goals in European competition last time out, but he scored three of those in the Super Cup.
If he can bag a hat-trick this evening, this fine player will reach yet another landmark. Who would back against him?!
Olympiacos come into this game in woeful form, having won only four of their previous 12 games and a loss to arch rivals Panathinaikos at the weekend heaped more pressure on manager Takis Lemonis.
It's unlikely things will get any easier for Lemonis this evening.
Barcelona boss Valverde returns to the side who he managed successfully in two spells between 2008 and 2012. During his time here he led he club to three league titles and two domestic cups, and the 53-year-old admits it will be an emotional night for him.
"It's emotional to come here to Athens, to this stadium, for what it has meant to me and for what is at stake," he said.
The visitors are missing a host of players, including Andres Iniesta and Gerard Pique who is suspended after his bizarre sending off in the last meeting between the sides.
Javier Mascherano passed a late fitness test and starts in defence, while Denis Suarez is handed a rare start in midfield. As expected, the formidable duo Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi are in attack.
Barcelona have won all of their group games and will seal their place in the last 16 with another victory this evening, providing Juvenus don't lose to Sporting in Group D's other contest. Even a draw may be enough for Barca, if Sporting are defeated.
Erneste Valverde's side breezed past Olympiacos a fortnight ago, running out 3-1 winners, and are firm favourites to chalk up another healthy win.
