Bernado lashes out at Serdar and escapes a booking. Laporte then nudges Embolo from behind to concede a free kick just over the halfway line in City's half.

Sterling blocks a cross on the left wing and wins a goal kick courtesy of a ricochet.

Bentaleb is held back on the left wing by Bernardo, and they win a free kick in their half.

Gundogan's free kick clatters into the wall and spoons up, and Sterling is penalised for a foul on Fahrmann.

The previously bald David Silva lines up a free kick with Gundogan on the wing.

Walker picks out Sterling with a great ball into the box. Sterling pulls it back to Aguero and he flicks his effort against the near post from five yards out.

City play the ball happily in Schalke's half before a high ball out for Sane drifts out of play.

An easy opening stage for City so far in this half.

Sterling skips past Bentaleb and has a pass deflected as he aims behind the defence.

Sane wins a free kick from Embolo on the left wing in a dangerous position. Sane receives the cross but it's cleared before Sane can get a touch to it.

The Schalke fans are belting out their riffs in the stand, as yet unmatched by the home fans.

Schalke break from City's short corner, Embolo is ound on the right, and his cross is headed away at the near post by Gundogan, who had rushed back.

Pep Guardiola has downplayed his side's chances: "This competition is judged that when you are out of the last 16 it is a big disaster. My perspective is completely different. People say it is easy. Imagine to get into the last eight teams in Europe? Of course we want to win it but the other teams also have this desire. People think that because Real Madrid are not there, this competition will be easy. Of course I thought they were the favourites but there still remains incredible clubs to beat."

Schalke are not having their greatest season. Qualified for the Champions League last season, they now are in 14th, and only four points above the bottom three. Disastrous, then.
