MANCHESTER CITY V ATLETICO MADRID: GUARDIOLA EYEING EUROPEAN GLORY AS SIMEONE BRINGS IN-FORM ATLETICO TO THE ETIHAD IN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

It's all over! De Bruyne's second half strike ensures Manchester City take a slender lead to Madrid for the second leg next Wednesday! It was a cagey affair with one moment of magic all it would take to swing the game to one side. Foden provided the telling pass and De Bruyne delivered the decisive goal. Advantage City at half-time in the tie!

We're into the final five minutes of normal time at the Etihad. De Bruyne, whose goal is the only difference between the teams, blazes the ball high and wide from distance. Two subs made an immediate impact there for City, great management from Guardiola. Grealish drew a foul and a yellow card, Foden assisted what could be the deciding goal in this first leg. Game changers.

Finally, the deadlock is broken and it's City who have picked the lock! Foden, who has just come onto the pitch, feeds De Bruyne on the right side of the box, the Belgian coolly slots past Oblak into the opposite corner and the Etihad is rocking!

Guardiola reacts with a triple change of his own. Gundogan, Mahrez and Sterling make way for Grealish, Foden and Jesus. Instantly, Grealish draws a foul which results in a yellow card. Instant impact.

Once again, City are screaming for a penalty as Sterling goes down under a challenge as he looked to latch onto De Bruyne's through ball into the box. The referee waves away the appeals and VAR decide not to intervene.

The visitors are looking to take advantage of a little bit of sloppiness which has crept into City's place in the last few minutes. This game is nicely poised and a goal would swing the pendulum dramatically. Can anyone spark a moment of magic?

The City substitutes have stepped up their warm-up routines on the sidelines, with Foden among those down there. How long before Guardiola turns to the bench in an attempt to swing the game his way?

You don't see this too often, a triple change for Atletico with half an hour to play here at the Etihad. De Paul, Cunha and Correa are entering the fray with Koke, Griezmann and Llorente making way.

Great save from Oblak from that second free-kick! De Bruyne, from his kind of territory, strikes a powerful low effort towards the bottom corner but Oblak gets down well and then scoops the ball away from danger with his feet.

City have a free-kick from distance, De Bruyne and Mahrez stand over the ball. The former plays a quick one-two with Gundogan who finds Mahrez, who is hacked down and it's another free-kick to City. That one came from the training pitch, for sure.

Llorente beats the offside trap this time around however, his shot is tame and fails to trouble Ederson, whose gloves are yet to feel the sting of the ball so far. It's more end-to-end with both sides looking to take more risks in pursuit of a golden opening goal.

Llorente breaks the City line for a second time, but again, he is way offside. City race up the other end and win a corner which comes to nothing. Atletico respond with a counter but Griezmann's pass is over hit and the attack fizzles out. A more lively start to the second period.

The teams are back for the second half and we are underway once again, with Atletico kick starting the next 45 minutes that will take us to half-time in the overall tie. Can City make all their pressure count for something, or have Atletico got a trick up their sleeves?

After almost 400 passes for City, the referee brings the half to a close. City have asked all the questions, but Atletico have provided all the answers so far. A frustrating first 45 minutes for the hosts, while the visitors seem to be enjoying the sights they are seeing. It's goalless at the break!

The more you look at how Atletico have set themselves up defensively, the more impressive it is. It may not seem it to the naked eye but their discipline, organisation and work rate are sucking the enthusiasm out of City's attacks and the mood among the home supporters. How long they can keep this up?
