Evening all and welcome to Manchester United v Atalanta!

Atalanta will smell blood here. They know United are high on quality but low on confidence, so though they started fairly well, now things are going wrong, they're vulnerable.

There was a VAR check to see whether Pasalic was ahead of the ball but he wasn't - though it was close.

Manchester United 0-1 Atalanta (Pasalic) A quick free-kick sends Murial running the channel, and when he turns to send it backwards, Ilicic plays a tremendous reverse-pass into the area he vacated, putting Zappacosta away; his cross is low and hard, slid home by Pasalic, and United are in huge trouble!

Atalanta have Lovato warming up; it looks like Demiral has a problem.

The first free-kick is headed back to Fernandes, who makes a mess of his second attempt; Atalanta counter, but this time United have players back and Lindelof regains possession easily enough.

A terrific long pass from McTominay sets Ronaldo away, then Demiral shoves him from behind and the ball runs out of play; the ref gives a corner, but that's a free-kick really.

Good from United again, Fred winning the ball and Greenwood touching off for Ronaldo, who might shoot, but instead slides one more to Fernandes. His shot is deflected, the ball ballooning for Musso to collect, but this is much better from the home side.

United look the likelier scorers, but Atalanta are passing it positively when they can.

United are playing with all the intensity they lacked at the weekend, and Bruno scavenging the ball off Kopmeiners llustrates that; he slides a quick pass ahead of Rashford, who pinches three yards off De Roon but can't quite manage the fourth to get onto himself in.

I meant to say earlier, De Roon is usually a midfielder, but he's playing at the back because of injury. A hungry Rashford sounds like a tricky night at the coalface.

Already, the game has a terrific tempo, and a thunking Maguire header sends Rashford running towards the Atalanta box. But he tries to jink inside De Roon, who reads him well enough to block his path.

Zappacosta beats Shaw then runs at Maguire, who's far too strong, getting body between man and ball and winning a free-kick as it runs behind.

McTominay charges through midfield and slides Rashford in! He draws the keeper - too much, actually, taking the ball too close - so that by the time he has to shoot, he can only really chip but instead looks for the far corner, sweeping wide. He's spared too much shame when the flag goes up, and that's exactly the kind of thing United need to look for.

Fred cracks a pass into Rashford and he does really well to hold off his man - last season, when he's still with jiggered shoulder, that doesn't happen. The bal then makes its way right and Bruno is indeed helping out out there.

Shaw gives it away but Ronaldo wins it back - not sure I'll type that again, in my life. United can't make anything of it, but that's more like the necessary intensity.
