Whichever way we look at it, Manchester City laid down a marker last night, their thumping win ast Sporting underlining their status as competition favourites. And, while there remain various teams good enough to beat them either over two legs or in a final. there remains only one team good enough to be on their level: Bayern Munich.

Under Julian Nagelsmann, the perennial German champions have become ever harder to handle in attack, and though they look vulnerable in the centre of defence - likewise City, against the best - their midfield dominance is such that getting at it is extremely problematic.

Salzburg, though, are not to be underestimated. In midfield, Brenden Aaronson is improving fast, while up front, Karim Adeyemi and Noah Okafor are a difficult night for pretty much anyone.This is going to be better than you think it is.
