Champions League Group A result: Joel Matip nets late winner for Liverpool after Ajax's Mohammed Kudus had cancelled out Mo Salah's opener

The Liverpool boss was asked about the Queen's passing in his pre-match media briefings and also used tonight's programme nights to discuss how Anfield will pay its respects.

"The events that surround tonight’s game means the occasion will be different to what we have become used to on European nights at Anfield. The loss of Queen Elizabeth II is a significant moment for the country and an incredibly sad moment for her family and all who cherished her, so playing football against this backdrop gives everyone involved a different kind of responsibility.

"As a club, we always take these responsibilities very seriously because it is the right thing to do. At the time of writing these notes it is too early to say what the gestures of respect will be, but whatever they are we will observe them as we always have."

"Ajax are in the Champions League and they belong there. Are they the strongest team in the competition? I haven't seen the rest yet. We have to show a reaction but that doesn't guarantee a result against Ajax. They've won all their games this season, they've had a massive rebuild but they're doing a really good job. We have not been consistent enough this season and we have to show that again. And that always starts with defending better."

The Dutch giants make just the one change from the 5-0 demolition of Heerenveen at the weekend as Steven Berghuis replaces Davy Klaassen.

Ajax have won all seven matches they have played so far this season by an aggregate of 25-3.

Diogo Jota replaces Roberto Firmino in attack while Joel Matip, Thiago and Kostas Tsimikas also come in as Jurgen Klopp looks for a reaction from the 4-1 drubbing in Naples.
