Ally McCoist calls for law change after late Champions League penalty drama between Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle

Ally McCoist labelled the penalty awarded to Paris Saint-Germain in stoppage time of their UEFA Champions League clash with Newcastle United "a disgrace" and called for a law change in the wording around spot-kicks. Eddie Howe's side led 1-0 in stoppage time before the referee pointed to the spot after VAR flagged a potential handball against Tino Livramento.

Ally McCoist joined the chorus of critics over the controversial penalty awarded to Paris Saint-Germain in the dying minutes of their UEFA Champions League clash with Newcastle United at the Parc des Princes.
The Magpies led through Alexander Isak's first-half strike and looked set to pull off a famous victory before a dubious late spot-kick converted by Kylian Mbappe rescued a 1-1 draw for PSG in Group F.
A "fuming" Jermaine Jenas described the decision as "one of the most disgraceful in a long time" and McCoist echoed the sentiments of his fellow TNT Sports pundit.
"It comes off his chest and hits his left elbow," McCoist told TNT Sports. "That is absolutely never a penalty.
"If we're giving penalty kicks for that in the biggest club competition on the planet, it's a disgrace.
"The whole night, sadly, will be remembered by that decision. I mean, if Newcastle had lost 3-0 and that penalty was the last we’re not really talking about it, we’re just saying it’s a poor decision and let’s move on.
"But that has affected the whole outcome of Newcastle’s... Eddie Howe will be thrilled with his team. He couldn’t go to the bench so his team worked their socks off.
"Everything defensively they did tonight I thought was absolutely spot on.
"Yes, their goalkeeper made a couple of fantastic saves but you need that when you come to places like this.
"But that incident and that penalty given in added-time has just spoiled literally the whole evening."
The result could have huge ramifications, too. Had Howe's side secured all three points, they would have moved above PSG into second place and had their destiny in their own hands with just one round of fixtures remaining.
Instead, they now sit third on five points and need to beat AC Milan and hope the result in the match between Borussia Dortmund and PSG falls in their favour.
It's just the latest incident that has brought VAR and its use into the spotlight for the wrong reasons and McCoist called for a change to be made in regard to penalties.
"They’re going to have to bring in the word ‘deliberate’ back into the law somewhere," he added.
"They're going to have to do that more because if you’re a supporter you’re devastated."
