Borussia Dortmund are through to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League after surviving a stern second half test to beat PSV Eindhoven 2-0 to complete a 3-1 aggregate victory.
The German hosts dominated the first half from the moment Jadon Sancho opened the scoring in the third minute with a shot that snuck past the keeper from outside the box.
But PSV had all the momentum in the second half and missed a hatful of chances, with Luuk de Jong’s stoppage time miss the most egregious of the wasted opportunities, as they failed to force extra-time.
Dortmund thought they’d bagged a second on the night against the run of play, only for Niclas Fullkrug’s finish to be ruled out for the most narrow of offsides.
But the home side cemented their spot in the last eight with the final of the game, as Marco Reus coolly slotted home after an error at the back from PSV, much to the delight of the fans at a raucous Signal Iduna Park.

Talking Point – Concerns for Dortmund despite progress

Borussia Dortmund are through to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League, but have plenty of questions to answer ahead of the next stage. The second half against PSV highlighted the severe lack of pace at the back for Dortmund that forced them deep and saw them lose all control of the game. The visitors really should have equalised and it’ll be fascinating to see what Dortmund do to adjust their approach in the last-eight.

Player Of The Match – Marcel Sabitzer

There were a number of decent performers for Dortmund, not least the goalkeeper, who produced a number of decent saves. But the quality of Sabitzer in the centre of the park was key to their early control in the game, and he stood up late on in the match to ease the pressure just when his team looked like they were going to cave.

Match Highlights

3’ – GOAL! DORTMUND 1-0 PSV (SANCHO)
Dortmund lead 2-1 on aggregate and it’s Jadon Sancho who’s got it. He steps onto his right outside the box and whips his shot through a defender’s legs and in off the near post, with the goalkeeper perhaps slightly unsighted. What a start for the home side!
78’ – NO GOAL! VAR INTERVENES
Reus delivers a peach of a cross from a free-kick and Fullkrug rises highest in the box to head home. Dortmund’s fans celebrate a goal that looks to have all-but sealed their progress, but a lengthy VAR check rules that it was offside and the goal is chalked off. It remains 1-0 on the night and 2-1 on aggregate.
94’ – THAT WAS THE MOMENT!
PSV work a brilliant chance for De Jong, cutting Dortmund open with a passive move that ends with De Jong shooting over the bar. He had to score there. He simply had to. What a wasted opportunity.
95’ – GOAL! DORTMUND 2-0 PSV (REUS)
It’s game over as PSV give the ball away looking for one more opportunity and Reus takes advantage, bursting through one-on-one and finishing into the bottom corner to make it 3-1 on aggregate and seal Dortmund’s spot in the quarter-finals.
