Borussia Dortmund are through to quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League after surviving a stern second half test to beat PSV Eindhoven 2-0 to complete a 3-1 aggregate victory.

The German hosts dominated the first half from the moment that Jadon Sancho opened the scoring in the third minute with a shot that snuck past the keeper from outside the box.

But PSV had all the momentum in the second half and missed a hat-full of chances, with Luuk de Jong’s stoppage time miss the most egregious of the wasted opportunities, as they failed to force extra-time.

Dortmund thought they’d bagged a second on the night against the run of play, only for Niclas Fullkrug’s finish to be ruled out for the most narrow of offsides.

But the home side cemented their spot in the last eight with the final of the game, as Marco Reus coolly slotted home after an error at the back from PSV, much to the delight of the fans at a raucous Signal Iduna Park.

Reus made the game safe with his last-gasp second on the night for Dortmund, but it was Sancho who put the hosts in control on the night with his opener, and here’s what he had to say after the game.

PSV work a brilliant chance for Luuk de Jong, cutting Dortmund open with a passive move that ends with De Jong shooting over the bar. He had to score there. He simply had to. What a wasted opportunity.

Lozano darts inside and shoots from range, but it’s straight at the keeper and that’s a bit of a waste. There were so many teammates forward.

Dortmund’s fans celebrate a goal that looks to have all-but sealed their progress, but a lengthy VAR check rules that it was offside and the goal is chalked off. It remains 1-0 on the night and 2-1 on aggregate.

It looks like Sancho has picked up a knock and he makes way for Reus.
