A goal from Niclas Fullkrug – at 30, his first in the Champions League – and another from the excellent Julian Brandt – secured Dortmund a deserved double over Newcastle. They lead Group F by a point from Paris Saint-Germain, who play later tonight, and one win from their final two games will give them an unassailable lead over tonight’s opponents – who know that maximum points might still mot be enough.

Still smarting following their weekend Klassiker humiliation, Dortmund started well without creating much, while Newcastle looked like they’d not shaken off the physical and mental dump beating Arsenal must’ve left them with. It was not, though, until the 26th minute that the balance of play was reflected by the score, Newcastle spurning various chances to clear the ball before Fullkrug eased home a decent finish.

Eddie Howe brought on Miguel Almiron and Anthony Gordon for the second half and Newcastle started it well, but on 56 minutes, Joelinton missed a header he could almost have blown in and his team struggled to create thereafter.

They did, though, force a succession of dangerous set-pieces, none of which created anything, then on 79 minutes, the excellent Karim Adeyemi swept one clear, Julian Brandt ran through, and using Marcel Sabitzer as a decoy, he swept a terrific finish across Nick Pope and into the far corner to settle the match.

Newcastle huffed and puffed thereafter, but they knew the game was up and now face a struggle not just to qualify but to hang onto the Europa League sport they currently occupy. With Alexander Isak, Dan Burn, Sven Botman, Elliot Anderson, Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy injured, and Sandro tonal suspended, Eddie Howe has work to do – and lots of it.

And a double over the black and white. They lead the group with seven while Paris have six and Newcastle four, which is to say two wins in their final two games won't necessarily save them.

But when their physicality doesn't make an impact, they don't quite have the class to compensate, in the absence of Tonali and Isak.

Livramento again finds himself with room to cross, alone down the left, and he looks towards the penalty spot then tries to sweep under the bar, but Kobel turns over and the corner is cleared.

Looks for Almiron on the other side of the pitch, but overhits his pass. This has looked like a game too far for Newcastle, and Bournemouth, who they visit at the weekend, won't be for lying down either.

But if Paris beat Milan tonight, they'll have nine points to Dortmund's seven and Newcastle's four. The Geordies are in big trouble.

He's had a slow start to this season, but at 18 he's plenty of time to get back under way.

But he battles down the left, riding a foul from Adeyemi before Hummels tidies up. The ref, though, has had a good game and brings play back for Newcastle free-kick, down the left. Trippier is due a goodun...

If the score stays as it is, Dortmund will have seven points and Newcastle four. The group won't be over, not close to it, but the Toon would need at least four points and probably six from Paris away and Milan home - given Dortmund would go through if points were level, on head-to-head.

And he feeds Brandt to his left, but the eventuating cross is intercepted well before reaching Fullkrug.

Who stays with him again, winning the ball. Presumably because of this match-up, Howe has moved his young full-back from right to left and he's doing as superbly as you'd expect there, though I wonder if his attacking thrust might be missed.

So everyone else enjoys a drinks break.
