STUBBORN MADRID DETHRONE CITY ON PENALTIES TO SEAL SEMI-FINAL SPOT
Andriy Lunin was the hero as Real Madrid overcame Manchester City on penalties to reach the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.
The goalkeeper saved from Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic, before Antonio Rudiger netted the decisive spot-kick as the 14-time winners dethroned the reigning champions.
Following a 3-3 draw in last week’s pulsating first leg, Madrid struck first at the Etihad Stadium as Rodrygo put them ahead inside 12 minutes, slotting home at the second attempt after Ederson saved his initial effort.
City looked to respond with Erling Haaland’s header hitting the crossbar, and Lunin making strong saves to deny fierce efforts from Kevin De Bruyne and Jack Grealish.
However, the hosts finally broke their visitors’ stubborn resistance 14 minutes from time when Rudiger cleared Jeremy Doku’s cross straight to De Bruyne, who calmly lifted the ball into the roof of the net.
Pep Guardiola’s side continued to dominate proceedings, but they could not find that winning goal as the tie edged towards a penalty shoot-out.
Although Ederson denied Luka Modric with Madrid’s first kick to give City the early advantage, Lunin came up trumps to deny Silva and Kovacic and swing the shoot-out back in favour of the visitors, who subsequently prevailed with Rudiger’s successful final kick setting up a last-four date with Bayern Munich.

BELLINGHAM: "EVERYONE WROTE US OFF"
"Most teams would fall apart when City get on top of you and the crowd get going, but we stood up really well," the Real Madrid midfielder told TNT Sports. "For half an hour or 40 minutes, we worked hard.
"A couple of us were doing roles that we’re not normally used to, with me having to go a bit higher to press. But it’s the sacrifices of your own game that you have to make, and the lads did it brilliantly.
"Our biggest strength is that [the manager] finds a way to let a lot of the boys play with freedom. As a man, he just fills you with calmness and confidence."
On life at Madrid, he added: "You’ve got to see it as a responsibility more than pressure. If you want to come to a club like Real Madrid, you’ve got to take that step and be willing to come under scrutiny and be under that spotlight. If you’re here then it probably means you can handle it, so you’ve got to trust the process."
Assessing the semi-final against Bayern Munich, he said: "We’re always confident in our own ability. Everyone wrote us off before this tie. We’ve got nothing to worry about. We respect their talent and quality, and we’ll have to approach it with the same focus as today."
