Kylian Mbappe was the inevitable hero as Paris Saint-Germain beat Real Sociedad 2-0 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Last 16 encounter at the Parc des Princes.

The 25-year-old France international, who is being heavily tipped to leave for Real Madrid in the summer, broke the deadlock with a poacher’s goal just shy of the hour.

Bradley Barcola’s solo effort then sealed the win 20 minutes from time as Luis Enrique’s men produced a much-improved second-half showing.

La Real had dominated from the off with a relentless, aggressive high press suffocating the hosts and leading to disenchantment from the home crowd.

Andre Silva headed just wide and Mikel Merino thumped the crossbar with a superb strike on the stroke of half time as Imanol Alguacil’s men threatened an upset.

However, PSG raised their level following the break and the Basque side seemed to wilt leading to Mbappe and Barcola helping the hosts claim a significant advantage to take to Spain.

Next up, PSG visit Nantes in Ligue 1 on Saturday while Sociedad travel to Mallorca in La Liga on Sunday. The second leg of this Champions League tie takes place on March 5.
