UEFA Champions League live – Newcastle United crash out of Europe in late defeat to Milan as Scottish champions Celtic end 10-year wait for home win against Feyenoord after Manchester City kids win in Belgrade

Eight teams from the Champions League, including Milan, Benfica and Galatasaray, will drop into the play-off round for the tournament, but sadly Manchester United, Newcastle and Celtic will be taking no further part in European competition this season.

"I thought there were some really good bits, we were dominant at times, but probably needed the second goal," said the Newcastle manager on TNT Sports after the 2-1 defeat to Milan. "We didn't defend the two goals well enough.

"It was very much end to end. Both teams were desperate to win. We wanted to win the game, and we were trying to head for the Champions League, so we had to be brave.

"They had to be brave. It made for a very good game. We did create chances, and we're absolutely devastated not to go through."

Gustaf Lagerbielke headed home in added time to give the Glasgow a dramatic first win of the UEFA Champions League this season in a 2-1 win over Feyenoord. And their first home victory since they defeated Ajax at Celtic Park in 2013.

Xavi's side won UEFA Champions League Group H, but a much-changed side lost 3-2 to Antwerp in Belgium.

"There was a lot of rotation made by Xavi, it was a B team, but still with the ball it was quite average," said TNT Sports pundit Julien Laurens.

"I'm not convinced at all. I think Xavi has a lot of work to do. We know they can't strengthen the squad because they don't have a lot of money.

"When we talk about City, Bayern and Real Madrid, I think they are way below right now."

The TNT Sports pundit feels a lack of a clinical edge was the difference between them and Milan in a late 2-1 win for the Serie A side at St James' Park.

"Eddie Howe and the players can't say this, but I'm guaranteeing you now, they will be delighted I think to not go into the Europa League," said Rio Ferdinand on TNT Sports.

"Because the amount of injuries they've got, and quite a few of them are medium to long-term, so it makes it very difficult to be batting on many fronts in different competitions when your squad is so threadbare."

It will be broacast live on Monday morning at 11am on TNT Sports.

The first legs will be held on the 13/14 and 20/21 February and the second legs on 5/6 and 12/13 March.

Teams from the same group can't be drawn together or from same country at this stage.

Or winter in the UEFA Champions League.

Jermaine Jenas insists Newcastle had every right to push for a late winner against Milan to keep alive their UEFA Champions League dream.

Eddie Howe's side shipped a late goal to lose 2-1 and crash out of Europe, but Jenas feels they should have no regrets.

"That moment for me (losing the late goal) told me everything about this team. They are dreamers," said Jenas on TNT Sports.

"They're chasing big achievements. They're not thinking let's hold on for Europa League football, they're thinking 'let's get ourselves into the next round of the Champions League'.

"It cost them in the end, and it was a bitter pill to swallow."

Dead rubber or not, this is not what the La Liga giants will want from this evening.

A 2-1 defeat for the Premier League side to the Milan. They finish bottom of Group F. Milan go into the UEFA Europa League with Dortmund and PSG heading for the last 16. Phew! What a final night!
